Over the past few years, The Exodus Road has built a team of expert, specialized cyber investigators who have prepared and delivered dozens of target packages to police. We are celebrating a significant milestone for this team! They took the lead on an investigation that resulted in freedom for a young woman in Latin America, who was exploited for labor in a country in Southeast Asia. This was the team’s first successful solo operation. Vera (not her real name) was a mom needing ways to support herself and her kids. When a family member in Southeast Asia offered her a job at his bar, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. So Vera got on a plane, flying toward her hope for a new future. When she landed, her hope evaporated. Her family member paid her far below the agreed-upon salary, offering too little to live on. He accused her of accruing a travel debt and demanded repayment. Vera found herself trapped in forced labor, in debt bondage to her family member. He threatened her with his powerful connections with local governing authorities: if you try to leave or tell anyone, I’ll destroy your life. The father of Vera’s children felt deeply uneasy about the signs he was seeing. So he reached out to The Exodus Road’s team for assistance. Our cyber investigations team quickly went to work, coordinating with government officials to build an escape path. But first, Vera had to get her passport— which her trafficker had taken and hidden. Everything hinged on Vera’s incredible bravery. She waited for an opportunity when he was away from home. Then she acted, sneaking in to reclaim her documents. Eventually, Vera made it home. This is a landmark case for The Exodus Road’s cyber investigations team. It’s an example of how technology can be used for immense good. Thank you for being part of empowering this forward momentum in the fight against trafficking! Read full story below:

Global VP Cybersecurity Risk Management | European Deputy General Manager | Counsel Appointed Cyber Adviser | U.S DoD CMMC AB Member | Founder and Partner | Chartered Security Professional and Assessor
Thank you Stephanie Stacey, as with other UK firms, Capita's cybersecurity challenges are unlikely to stop with the UK DPA. EU cyber regulation NIS 2 and DORA will come into effect in late 2024, requiring CNI providers and Financial Institutions (FIs) oversight and assure their cybersecurity risk management, and that of their third party suppliers, including MSPs. The SEC final cyber ruling passed on the 26th July 2023 effects U.S Domestic and Foreign Private Issuers. While Capita is not a U.S market registrant, UK and EU registrants are required to oversight and assure the cyber risks of their third party suppliers, that includes MSPs. One therefore has to consider the effects of U.S and EU cyber regulation. #cybersecurity #cyberriskmanagement
Capita is one of the UK's biggest outsourcing firms, holding billions in public sector contracts. It's also still reeling from a major cyberattack in March, which saw extortionists from Black Basta breach the company's software and compromise personal data. Capita has estimated that the cost of handling the cyberattack will ultimately run at around £20m and £25m — and that's likely not even accounting for any potential fines that might be levied. Nevertheless, despite these well-known and costly cybersecurity woes, the UK's public sector has kept on investing in Capita. I spoke to long-time critic Joel Benjamin and #cybersecurity expert Andy Watkin-Child CSyP, CEng, AMAE to figure out why. Read more at Tech Monitor. https://lnkd.in/epGzTtC4
Why the public sector still loves Capita (even though it got hacked)

Kudos to Alan Brown, our Head of Risk and Security, who was featured in this article! There's a lot of innovation happening in our region!
It was a pleasure to share with Atlantic Business Magazine about the close connection between #cybersecurity and #fintech. It's always great to see a variety of companies highlighted like Gray Wolf Analytics, TrojAI, Beauceron Security, League Data and Verafin. While most of Atlantic Canada’s fintech companies are still young, Atlantic FinTech’s projections show that industry growth will continue to accelerate. In fact, the most recent predictions show that within a decade, the region will boast over a thousand fintechs and attract billions of dollars in investments. “We are going in a trajectory that will impact the economics of the [Atlantic] provinces in a very high percent,” says Alicia Roisman Ismach. “This industry can really impact the economics of the four provinces because they’re really one region. We can talk about provinces, but in reality, only together do we have the economies of scale to help these companies and to bring them to the world.” https://lnkd.in/ddNEqytd #AtlanticFintech #GrowthCommunity

I am carrying my passport today - not because I am going on holidays 🏝️😊 … but because a financial institution needs a copy of it 🤦🏻♂️ - witnessed by a JP - to update their identity records. 1️⃣ I have to find a photocopier. I used to (about 6 years ago) have one of those fax/scanner/copiers at home. They used to break down every year or so and the ink cartridges were quite expensive … now I just use my smart phone to send docs. 2️⃣ need to find a JP - who are amazing generous volunteers 🙏🙏 but I still have to take time out of the day to find and sign. 3️⃣ I hope this financial institution is super cyber safe - as they are creating a rich PDF identity honey pot🍯 4️⃣ good news is on the horizon. A former staffer of mine - Jordan Hatch 🏆 and his team - are now working for the Feds and driving reform to modernise commonwealth statutory declarations. We need to keep reforming along these lines - these 20th century processes are unproductive and a cyber/privacy risk - ie - not fit for purpose in the 21st century - of which we are almost a quarter of the way in 🙃

"If I was a director of a company that required all this personal information to be collected and stored - it would keep me awake at night…" We couldn't agree more, Victor Dominello. It's time that company directors take hold and ensure their business detects and understands what personal information (PI) they have on hand, assess whether that information is secure, and ensure they are compliant with Privacy Act and OAIC guidelines. Do you know what PI is in your data stores? #companydirector #personalinformation #pidetection #privacypolicy

BRICS is threatened using multiple tricks to discourage the relationship between members. South Africa and its sectors do not fear external threats easily because of a very strong patriotic spirit of citizens that demystify even the most evil system. Apartheid may have been damaging but the positive result from it was it created a resilient nation that is united in purpose beyond disagreement. If these alleged Brazilian hackers think citizens hide their financial status or credit profile they need to relook at the number of unashamed government grant beneficiaries, unemployed graduates, inactive businesses, public debt, and other indicators of a distressed economy. What they are doing is lower than petty crime and not damaging for citizens in the absence of human dignity as a result of systematic poverty. This is a a country that threw stones and won against apartheid army tankers and collaborated mercenary groups of the 21 and 32 battalion. These are fearless people. South Africans may be exhausted by the struggle but they will never be discouraged from showing up and doing their best in the most democratic way. The hackers may leak and mop their harmless threat because that puts no plate on anyone's table. Hacking electoral systems would have been more valuable. https://lnkd.in/e7RGf7H3
