It is crucial to have well-defined care practices for these infants and their families. 📌 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: There is significant variability in ethical decision-making and palliative care practices across Europe and within countries. This inconsistency can affect the quality of care provided. 📌 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: The European Standards of Care for Newborn Health (ESCNH) define core issues and establish guidelines to benefit these infants and their families. The ESCNH bring together over 220 healthcare professionals, parent representatives, and industry specialists from more than 30 countries. This essential neonatal care practice involves continuous skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely discharge from the NICU. It’s a low-cost, high-outcome intervention that significantly improves health outcomes for newborns and supports families globally. Key benefits of KMC include: - reducing infant mortality and infections - improving growth, brain development, and long-term outcomes - strengthening bonding and reducing stress for infants and parents - lowering hospital costs and easing the workload for healthcare professionals Despite these benefits, some hospitals are unjustly charging families for KMC. We strongly oppose such practices and 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧’𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. Join us in this crucial advocacy effort. We are publishing a statement on 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙆𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙤 𝙈𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 (𝙆𝙈𝘾), a neonatal care practice that is not just beneficial but essential for preterm and sick newborns. KMC involves continuous skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely discharge from the NICU. 𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚, and we strongly oppose any practices where families are charged for this care. KMC offers 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨: - reduced mortality and infections - stabilised heart rates and improved brain development - improved long-term social and behavioural outcomes - strengthened bonding and reduced stress for both infants and parents Moreover, 𝙆𝙈𝘾 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙨 by reducing the workload on medical staff, lowering hospital costs, and requiring less expensive equipment. 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭- 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞: Interdisciplinary neonatal palliative care focuses on the quality of life for both the infant and the family. All relevant medical information, prognosis, and care choices should be shared, respecting family values and rights. 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Overcoming barriers related to language, education, culture, and socio-economic status with clear and compassionate communication is essential. The European Standards of Care for Newborn Health (ESCNH) provide comprehensive guidelines to help healthcare professionals deliver optimal care from the hospital to school age. Kangaroo Mother Care can be a real life-saver! This #WorldPrematurityDay2023, we want to raise awareness for the benefits of #KMC, a neonatal care practice beneficial for all newborns but especially those #BornTooSoon, with low birth-weight, or in need of immediate medical attention. KMC, as defined by the WHO, comprises: 🦘 continuous skin-to-skin contact for at least 8 hours a day 🦘 exclusive breastfeeding or breastmilk feeding 🦘 timely discharge from the healthcare facility KMC empowers the mother to take control of her own and her infant’s care. It marks a significant reversal in power dynamics in healthcare systems around the globe. KMC prioritizes the needs of families and newborns, thus marking a paradigm shift in newborn and maternal care. This #WPD2023, we call for immediate skin-to-skin care for every baby everywhere.
