Recently, we interviewed creatives in Singapore about how they found their place and voice in the world. I've always been intrigued by this; I feel like it's particularly challenging in a pragmatic, young country like Singapore. When crafting your creative identity, what you are able to express will be dependant on cultural influences. Singapore is known for its geographical importance in the world economy. For us to be "successful" we need to be open and forward looking. We are at the intersection of Asian and Western — in terms of values and inspiration. We are grounded by Asian roots, but often look at Western aspirations. Therein lies the conundrum: what exactly forms a unique, Singaporean creative identity? I struggle to find an answer, but one thing I can be sure of is that we need to know how to bridge different worlds meaningfully. It can't just be about following trends, you're probably not expressing your true self, even if you gain popularity. It can't just lean on one side: Asian or Western. We have to dig deep as individuals to better understand yourself and find your voice; and what you can meaningfully put out into the world. Thank you, Singapore, for providing the safety and opportunity to do this. Happy 59th <3

In my father's era, skepticism was the norm rather than the exception when it came to the future of Singapore's landscape. Many from his generation could hardly fathom the success of projects involving reclaimed land, nor could they envision the necessity of an extensive MRT network for such a seemingly compact island. Today, the idea that Singapore could thrive without these developments seems almost unimaginable. Similarly, today’s younger Singaporeans might find it hard to appreciate why Big Splash in Tanjong Katong was once the pinnacle of water entertainment. In its heyday, this was the place to be—a vibrant hub of splashing fun that captured the imaginations of an entire generation, a stark contrast to the sleek water parks and digital playgrounds we see today. These shifts not only highlight the rapid pace of our nation's development but also underline a broader dialogue between past and present generations about the vision and transformation of Singapore. Each generation has its landmarks, both physical and cultural, that define its era and shape its collective memory.

The term "nation branding" has been described as the favourable images of countries resulting from "strategy, substance, and symbolic actions." For Rick Buck Song Koh, guest lecturer at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), and author of Brand Singapore, it's all about reputation. As he puts it, “Your reputation is your most valuable asset, because with it you can get so much done. And if you've got a bad reputation, then you've got a mountain to climb". In this Global-is-Asian article, he discusses the strategies that have made Singapore a model for nation branding, focusing on economic development, tourism, and international relations. Exciting encounters each week with global visionaries like Jensen Loke choosing Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur as their business hub! Here are 3 key merits: 1. Multilingual Advantage: Malaysia's linguistic diversity facilitates seamless business connections. Mastering Cantonese for Hong Kong, Malay for Indonesia, Mandarin for Taiwan, and English for broader Asia Pacific markets opens doors to unparalleled opportunities. 2. Strategic Location: KL's strategic position in the heart of Asia provides a gateway to thriving markets. Accessing diverse consumer bases becomes not just a possibility but a strategic advantage for sustainable growth. 3. Business-Friendly Environment: Malaysia's progressive policies, coupled with a robust infrastructure, foster an ideal ecosystem for business success. The welcoming atmosphere ensures a smooth transition and sets the stage for your ventures to flourish.

Agree. Building a country is a never ending endeavour. We must continue unabated. Likewise regional integration and reconnecting the world through globalisation with greater distributive parity and equity. It is an exciting future ahead notwithstanding the many political security challenges. It is critical to get the younger generation interested and involved in solving global issues.
As Singapore matures, some wonder if we have reached our limits. I say we are never done building Singapore. We will continue to imagine new possibilities, and make Singapore a better home for all of us. 📹 Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/gk7X8CnW

ESG in 1 Word of Thought --- Keep on moving as the Chinese saying goes "Without progressing, it is a regress" (不进则退)! #environmentalsocialandgovernance is an all inclusive and whole-of-nation system of strategic management pivoted on public private partnership to transition every individual and community into a just and green transformed economy. Anything worth doing today is to protect the shared environment from degradation, enhance the social fabric for joint destiny and sustain the governance mechanism that reaps common prosperity. Safety and Security. What many from foreign countries may not be aware of and what many Singaporeans may have taken granted for.
Today our message "Truly Secure Your Wealth" is increasingly resonating with sophisticated and wealthy individuals who are concerned about the next systemic crisis and are preparing for it while it’s still easy to do so.

This week at work has been quite hectic—tackling urgent issues, racing to meet deadlines, and managing a surge of new projects and escalations. I had been intending to write my thoughts for National Day for a few weeks and finally found the time to do so today. As a Singaporean, I feel a profound sense of pride every National Day. Our nation has achieved success in numerous areas, and the diverse colleagues I interact with daily at work are a testament to Singapore's accomplishments. We've developed an economy and society that attract talent from around the globe. From our modest beginnings, the little red dot has evolved into a dynamic and thriving society. This progress is a result of the hard work, resilience, and determination of all Singaporeans, both past and present. But my affection for Singapore extends beyond pride in our achievements. It stems from a deep desire to see our nation continue to grow—not just in terms of wealth or prestige, but in our ability to care for one another. As we look to the future of our nation-building journey, my greatest hope for Singapore is that we become a genuinely caring society, where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to contribute. Ultimately, the essence of a successful nation is not just reflected in economic metrics like our global GDP per capita ranking or our esteemed position as the country with the world's most powerful passport. What truly unites us is our ability to connect and support one another and that is my greatest wish for Singapore this national year and for the many years to come! Happy National Day, Singapore ! read my full post on my substack: https://lnkd.in/gGrTZu5V
