Celebrating #Pride #Month (post 2) How can we Celebrate Pride Month? 1. we can join local Pride parades, festivals, and events to show support and solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. or we can attend virtual events and webinars if in-person participation is not possible. 2. we can educate ourselves and others about LGBTQ+ rights, and issues. 3. we can support LGBTQ+ authors, artists, and creators by consuming and promoting their work. 4. we can support LGBTQ+ Organizations by donating or volunteering. 5. last but not least, we can/should use inclusive language, respect pronouns, and stand against discrimination in all forms. This creates safe and inclusive spaces in your workplace, school, or community for LGBTQ+ individuals.

While Pride Month shines a light on diversity and inclusion, a common sight is companies sporting rainbow logos and limited-edition merchandise. This practice, known as "rainbow washing" or "pinkwashing," can have unintended consequences. Initially, widespread corporate support can feel validating for LGBTQ+ individuals. However, the realization that much of this support lacks substance can lead to feelings of betrayal, cynicism, and disappointment. Here's how we promote authenticity: 🌈 Look beyond the rainbow and assess companies' LGBTQ+ rights contributions 🌈 Encourage companies to be transparent about their efforts to create an inclusive workplace. 🌈 Advocate for resources flowing directly to LGBTQ+ organizations. Remember to support LGBTQ+ creators, donate to charities, and hold companies accountable always and not just during #Pride!

In marketing, we have something called seasonal content, but should all relevant events be categorized as "seasonal content"? 🌈 As a marketer who champions inclusivity, I've grown weary of seeing Pride reduced to a marketing ploy. 🏳️🌈 This Pride Month, let's go beyond superficial gestures. Don't use this significant time if your commitment to LGBTQ+ rights isn't genuine and consistent year-round. 🌟 It's about making real changes in our companies and communities, ensuring inclusivity every day, not just in June. 🌈 Let's use this month as an opportunity for genuine advocacy and impactful actions. Reacting to 2023’s backlashes and boycotts, some brands have avoided Pride 2024 despite a clear commercial and moral imperative: globally, LGBTQ+ spending power rose by 20.5% between 2019 and 2023. Pride month is around the corner... Are you at risk for rainbow washing? Each year during Pride, companies modify their logo and merch with rainbow colours and images to demonstrate their support for the LGBTQ+ community. But are some of them just monetizing the rainbow? You might be familiar with green or blue washing, but another emerging issue in the ESG-universe to be aware of is rainbow washing—using rainbows in advertising or branding to indicate support for the LGBTQ+ community, but without providing that same support and advocacy for this marginalized group throughout the rest of the year. KOSA IS ABOUT DESIGN AND PROGRAMMING, not content. This is worth repeating. If the organizations focused on LGBTQ+ rights have withdrawn their opposition to KOSA and what remains are Big Tech, influencers, and others, then the issue is not LGBTQ+ rights. Big Tech exploits vulnerable communities. This is not even a question at this point. It’s Pride month. Let the pride washing commence. Companies that have never spoken about, shared, took a stance on, or took action on LGBTQ+ rights will now be donning the old rainbow flag to cash in on pride month, and tick a diversity box. Even companies that support politicians and parties with poor LGBTQ+ records will throw on a rainbow to get in on the action. We see you. We don’t need “awareness”, everyone’s heard of us.
