The Six Possible Revenue Categories on Your SaaS P&L✅ Let's start with #1...subscription revenue. Arguably at the top of the SaaS valuation pyramid. 💡 The Primary SaaS Revenue Categories - Subscription Revenue - fixed MRR or ARR contracts - Variable Revenue: usage-based, processing, transaction, and more - Professional Services: one-time revenue from the setup, onboarding, and training of your customers - Managed Services: subscription-based, human-powered services - Hardware Revenue: sales of physical products - Other Revenue: miscellaneous income streams like conferences and accounting adjustments. I'm also parking one-time software sales (the old model) here. ⚠️ Don't comingle your revenue streams! This is disastrous for your FP&A process, calculating your SaaS metrics, and understanding general business performance. And don't mix people-powered revenue and product-powered revenue. Your SaaS valuation relies on product-powered revenue. But a quick shout out to my Professional Services teams out there! You are 🥇🥇🥇! Are these the only 6 major revenue streams? Maybe not. But they cover the majority of SaaS companies. If you'd like the templates that I showed in this video, please comment "templates" below. I'll send 'em your way. #SaaS

Fundamental SaaS financial analysis begins with gross margin analysis. First, we must understand our overall gross margin. Then, we must calculate our margins by revenue stream. For syntax, I often use gross profit and gross margin as the same term, be we express this metric as a percentage. We are calculating the % profit generated from our revenue streams. The common margins that I'm calculating for SaaS companies: ✔️ Overall ✔️ Subscription ✔️ Variable ✔️ Services ✔️ Hardware If you have LOW or HIGH overall GP %, you must understand what contributes to your overall %. To calculate margins accurately, you must: ✔️ Have clear and distinct revenue categories ✔️ Proper COGS setup This gets back to the importance of the correctly formatted SaaS P&L To calculate your margins by revenue stream, check out my blog post link below.
