Over nine days, we are sharing the 9 different sections of The Global Biodiversity Standard manual for assessment and best practices. Section 1 summarises the methodology used by TGBS, including its scope, criteria and certification tiers. In total, sites assessed by TGBS are scored against 8 criteria: - Select appropriate sites to enhance native biodiversity. - Enhance protection of existing habitats and biodiversity. - Protect, restore and manage biodiversity in consultation and partnership with local communities and other stakeholders. - Aim to maximise biodiversity recovery through ecosystem restoration. - Avoid and reduce invasive or potentially invasive species. - Prioritise the use of native, threatened and rare species. - Promote biodiversity and adaptive capacity. - Implement robust monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management of biodiversity. Congratulations to Dr Nakul Chettri.👏 ICIMOD Senior Biodiversity Specialist Nakul Chettri has been selected as one of the scoping experts for the Second Global Assessment of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the independent body on conservation and sustainable use of #biodiversity. IPBES’s Second Global Assessment of Biodiversity and #EcosystemServices is slated to be considered by its plenary in 2028. Who are the project partners? 🙋 Eurac Research, lead partner, together with 11 other partners, from protected areas managers to national authorities, to scientists of Austria, Italy, Slovenia, France, Germany, and Switzerland. What will they do? 🔧 Calculate and map biodiversity indicators to establish a common understanding of the Alpine biodiversity conservation status. 💧 Apply the indicators on the ground to contribute to an early warning system for the Alps. 📣 Ensure consistency with the policy needs of the Alpine countries to better implement and use the project results in the long term. What are #biodiversity credits, how do they work, and can they really boost conservation? This article by the @World Resources Institute, aims to answer these questions while exploring how they can be used to increase funding for biodiversity from the #PrivatSector. For example, two companies in #Colombia are selling biodiversity credits to support conservation efforts in the Bosque de Niebla cloud forest in #Colombia and working with local landowners to conserve or restore an area. Tree plantations are managed as a mosaic of areas for production and biodiversity conservation.🦋🌳 Protected areas are set aside from production for the conservation and/or restoration of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and cultural values. These protected areas are crucial for guarding native habitats and ecosystems. They are also valuable hubs for scientific research, environmental education, and ecotourism. 🔬 We report protected areas annually as a percentage of the total land holdings in our joint-venture plantations in Brazil and Uruguay. Today is Bird Day! 🌱 With #Biodiversity in crisis - action is required to protect species from extinction and ecosystems from severe degradation. A recent first-of-its kind study co-authored by BirdLife International scientists and published in Science Magazine has found that conservation actions are effectively halting and reversing #Biodiversity loss.
