Helsing’s three founders Niklas Köhler, Torsten Reil and Dr. Gundbert Scherf said, “European security is at a crossroads and Helsing will play a significant role in giving democratic societies the ability to deter and defend. But speed is of the essence. In a groundbreaking milestone, the US Air Force orchestrated the inaugural dogfight between a human pilot and an AI-operated fighter jet at California's Edwards Air Force Base in September of last year. The AI-controlled F-16 engaged in high-speed aerial combat with a manned F-16, executing both defensive and offensive maneuvers, including close-range dogfighting, at speeds exceeding 1,200 miles per hour. DARPA unveiled footage of the event, showcasing the autonomous aircraft, dubbed X-62A VISTA, a modified F-16 integrated with AI technology, heralding the pioneering use of machine learning in fighter jet control. With years of active development and the help of our trusted partners, we managed to develop an essential tool to help troops. We believe that laser target designators are the best way to help soldiers stay safe. They allow remotely controlled unmanned aerial vehicles to enter dangerous territories, designate targets, and launch a strike from a remote area. See it here, https://lnkd.in/e8WsVrS9 A few years ago, I decided to set about the monolithic task of cohering Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) in Defence. In doing so I founded the Defence RPAS Network. I had no idea if it would work, or even if I could do it but knew it was the right thing to do. At the time I never thought that journey I started would form the basis for a national strategy for all Uncrewed Systems (UxS) across all domains. Especially one that lays out the intent to disrupt the way we procure, regulate, and manage a £4.6bn portfolio - and in doing so transform defence acquisition. Like anything of this scale, it has not been a solo journey by any stretch, and I can only thank everyone that has lived and breathed it along with me. It hasn't been an easy path but the worthwhile ones very rarely are. I appreciate all the support, guidance and quite often disagreement! Every ounce of it has helped shape where we are today. There are far too many people to thank to name everyone, but I hope you know who you are and how much I've valued the help. It has been a honour to get to stand up the team who will lead the implementation and delivery of the strategy for Defence as the Chief of Staff for UxS. The scale of the challenge ahead really can’t be underestimated, but the team is up for the task! It's still very much the start of the beginning for Defence. For me though, it's the end of this adventure. I've been holding off on this for a while now, but it feels like the right time to let everyone know I'm moving onto the next challenge. I will be leaving the MOD in June this year after a much needed break. I'm still working out what's next. Any support or guidance (ideally over coffee) would be massively appreciated. I know UxS is the obvious field to move into, but I am just as open to something completely different. In the meantime, I'll be walking the Camino de Santiago trail to raise money for Combat Stress: The UK's Leading Charity for Veterans' Mental Health. I'll be walking from the end of March through to the end of April. It's nearly 500 miles and 37,000ft of total elevation gain in over 30 days! Russian losses: 60 (16x IFV/APC, 12x MBTs, 14x artillery, 1x SPAA, 2x UAV, 12x transports, 1x MRAP, 2x EW) Ukrainian losses: 14 (1x SPH, 2x MBT 3x IFV/APC, 2x MRAP, 1x UAV, 1x SAM, 3x transports, 1x ?????) A serious loss ratio for the Russians.
