The escalating demand for CAMHS in the North East and Cumbria reveals a dire need for systemic overhaul. Families face a labyrinthine system, with a staggering 45% referral surge since 2019 and over half rejected for treatment. This highlights a critical gap in our care for young minds, emphasizing the urgency of streamlined services and early intervention. We must prioritize our youth's mental health and foster a collaborative, well-resourced approach to support them. Let's discuss how we can better safeguard our children's futures. #MentalHealth #CAMHS #YouthWellbeing Your thoughts? Original article: https://lnkd.in/evS85Qnb

The UK's youth mental health crisis is alarming, with nearly 500k children awaiting treatment and wait times averaging 107 days. Recent data highlights a significant youth mental health crisis in North Carolina, with over 70% of children with mental health diagnoses not receiving treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues, leading to increased emergency department (ED) visits for mental health concerns. In 2021 alone, 67 children in NC died by suicide. Key challenges include: -Lack of behavioural health services and workforce -Increased "boarding" time in EDs, with many children waiting in non-therapeutic spaces -Rising rates of self-inflicted injuries, especially among young females Our healthcare systems are struggling to meet the demand, and urgent action is needed to provide better psychiatric care and support for our youth. Read more about these critical issues and the steps being taken to address them in the North Carolina Medical Journal: https://lnkd.in/eNypmAYe #YouthMentalHealth #BehavioralHealth #MentalHealthCrisis #NorthCarolina #Healthcare

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General described youth mental health as the “defining public health crisis of our time,” with a nearly 50% rise in suicide rates among youths aged 10-24 from 2010-21. A recent study reveals a critical issue: 3 out of 5 youth suicide victims lacked a documented mental health diagnosis. This highlights the urgent need for improved mental health detection, especially among minoritized racial and ethnic groups. As youth suicide becomes the second leading cause of death for those aged 10-14, it’s essential to take proactive measures. Early intervention, safe firearm storage, and strong community connections can make all the difference. Strengthening family bonds, fostering resilience, and equipping young people with coping strategies are crucial steps we must take. We share the responsibility of ensuring our youth have the chance to lead full, healthy lives. By working together, we can create positive change through community programs, culturally sensitive services, and increased access to care. Teachers warn families hitting ‘brick wall’ when trying to get help for #children A report last month by the Centre for Young Lives and the Child of the North multi-university research programme warned that the NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Camhs) are buckling under the strain of a “national epidemic” of #childrensMentalHealth problems. It revealed that, at the end of last year, 32,000 children had been waiting more than two years to be seen. Two-thirds of children were not directed to any form of interim support, it said, with #self-harm and #suicide while they waited “too familiar”. For this reason, we at Nip in the Bud continue to make films and other #free #evidence-based #resources for both #families and #teachers to support children struggling with mental health issues. Many search and rescue teams are made up of civilian workers who take on the role of a First Responder for their community. When policymakers and clinicians are discussing First Responder populations, it is important to acknowledge the civilian arm of First Responders. Rescue and recovery efforts can expose these volunteers to psychologically traumatizing situations and scenes. A technique like the ASAP that offers silent processing while acknowledging the emotional toll of responder services is one way we’re working to build retention and resilience in our volunteer organizations. Let’s encourage a First Responder culture that helps promote pride in mental health care so we can keep showing up for our community. Share with a volunteer organization or individual you know to say thank you and acknowledge the mental load they willingly carry so they can help others. vtresponderwellness.com #youdeservecaretoo #firstrespondermentalhealth #volunteermentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthtools #silentgrouptherapytools #mountainrescue #responderresilience

Approximately 1 in 5 teens aged 12-18 suffer from a mental health disorder. #HEAA, introduced by @CAPAC, @TheBlackCaucus, and @HispanicCaucus, will combat mental health disparities in youth by: 🧸Increasing funding for the NIH to carry out the Strategic Framework For Addressing Youth Mental Health Disparities. 🧸Direct the HHS Secretary to study and report on the AANHPI youth mental health crisis. 🧸Increasing the number of entities eligible for grants supporting pediatric behavioral health care. Let’s work towards ending the health disparities in our country. #HEAA paves the way for affordable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare, increasing the health and well-being of underserved and marginalized communities. #healthequityforall
