Great conversation with an excellent LP leader, Malcolm Gaspard. Regardless of were you are in your career take heed of Malcolm's advice - "You need to be the author of your own story and advocate for yourself." Here are a few of my additional thoughts on career development... - Be a constant learner (profession and industry) - Build relationships not just "connections" - Do great work - Take on new challenges and difficult assignments - Remember "No" may mean, "Next Option" or "New Opportunity" - Don't be afraid of failures or setbacks. They help you grow! Finally, remember a career path is a journey built upon knowledge, experience and growth. Build a foundation, develop goals that help you grow and be ready and prepared for opportunities that come your way. Thanks John Matas CFE, CFCI and Tracy Nini for bringing great leaders and learners to your podcast.

It can be done.
I met Krista in October at an American Rental Association event. She's my age and we had a ton in common - except she owns and operates a rental store all by herself in New York state. How fortunate I am to share the stories of impressively neat people like Krista.

Supporting individuals to find understanding of who they are as a person, to find understanding to concerns they have, growing self-esteem and confidence.
Client: l don’t know what l want or what l want to talk about. Me: That’s okay, we can sit and work together with the unknown to bring it into the known. Client: l took some photos of me and l really like them. Me: That sounds like confidence. Client: Yes, l feel more confident. We never know what our clients will bring to their sessions. It’s not all about being alongside your client through their pain of the known and unknown. There are also moments of celebrating the wins that lay beyond that pain. This is why l do what l do 😊

There maybe a systemic explanation for this: individuals and interactions belong to EQ/"soft skills" category which is downplayed and is secondary to the typical for-profit company KPIs like profit margins, revenue, CAC etc. I don't really foresee this changing in the near future.

Today, I was reminded of this image I made somewhere in 2011. Thanks to Michael K Sahota, Vincent Tietz, Todd Little and Alistair Cockburn for making history from that slide. Still relevant!

Why do I keep getting called Lewis? It's a curious phenomenon - and something that's been happening for years. Despite signing off my emails as Robert Lewis, I find myself addressed as just Lewis at least once a week. Even by people I have met?! And it begs the question: Why the oversight? Sure, having 3 first names in my title doesn't help, (my middle name being Stephen). And I've been guilty of misspelling names myself in the past. But this recurring theme got me thinking - are we truly paying attention to the finer details of our professional exchanges? Names do matter. They're not just labels; they represent identity and respect. Yet, in our hurried digital age, it seems we're skimming over the basics. So, let's raise the bar. Let's make a conscious effort to honor names and acknowledge the individuals behind them. It's not just a matter of correctness; it's about fostering genuine connections. And to my fellow professionals, let's challenge ourselves to get it right from the start. Because in the world of communication, every detail counts. #NamesMatter #AttentionToDetail
