My op ed in Kontan daily (21/9/24) with the title 'the steep road to a developed country'. According to a World Bank study (2024), from 1990 to the present, out of more than 100 developing countries, only 34 developing countries can become developed countries. One-third of the 34 countries could become developed countries, due to the skillful use of European market integration and the discovery of new oil resources. The Indonesian government has always touted Indonesia becoming a developed country by 2045 or a golden Indonesia. But there is no significant change at the moment. First in corruption prevention and law enforcement. Indonesia's biggest problem today. There is no great will in this area. If it is not taken seriously, it is difficult. This is because economic activity is always supported by good rules and law enforcement. Second, there is no good industrial policy and the focus is linked to job creation with high wages. Jokowi has always promoted mineral downstreaming. But, just look at it, the community near the mine does not enjoy the results. Poverty and ignorance are always inherent in their communities. Third, human resource capacity is very low. Education emphasizes more on just learning and getting a diploma. Indonesia's average IQ is only 78. Education only emphasizes memorization. In fact, the world is moving towards critical thinking, analytics, and foreign language skills.

The robust innovation and transformative technology solutions we've developed with Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia) result from collective efforts to break the mold of traditional mindsets. We've shifted from a top-down to a user-centric approach, from linear to iterative processes, and from being a feature factory to becoming a thinking partner. This close collaboration and new working culture between the technology team, government stakeholders, and users have been the key factors that led us to where we are today. What principles and methodologies have we applied to make these efforts effective? And what makes them unique compared to practices in the private sector? At NOICE Master Class next week, our Head of Research, Sylvia Putri, will share our journey and lessons learned in navigating technology development and its ecosystem for the public sector, specifically the education system. Join us to dive deep and register at bit.ly/NoiceMasterClass We look forward to seeing you there!

During a discussion with Mr. Ahmed Zaky Iskandar, who served as the Regent of Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia from 2013 to 2023, we delved into the intricacies of fostering synergy for the development of human capital—a vital cornerstone for the future prosperity of Banten and Indonesia as a whole. Throughout our conversation, Mr. Iskandar emphasized the critical importance of nurturing harmony and unity within the community as fundamental prerequisites for effective development initiatives. He highlighted that a cohesive and harmonious society provides the necessary foundation for fostering innovation, creativity, and productivity among its members. By cultivating an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation, we can harness the full potential of our human capital and drive sustainable progress. Furthermore, Mr. Iskandar underscored the significance of inclusive policies and programs aimed at addressing the diverse needs and aspirations of the population. He stressed the need for equitable access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities to ensure that every individual has the chance to thrive and contribute to the development of their community and nation. In light of these insights, it became evident that fostering synergy for human capital development requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses not only economic growth and infrastructure development but also social cohesion, inclusivity, and empowerment. Mr. Iskandar's tenure as the Regent of Tangerang exemplified a commitment to these principles, as evidenced by the various initiatives and policies implemented during his leadership. As we look towards the future, the lessons learned from our discussion with Mr. Iskandar serve as a guiding beacon for policymakers, community leaders, and stakeholders alike. By prioritizing the preservation of harmony and unity and investing in the holistic development of our human capital, we can pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for Banten, Indonesia, and beyond.
