At the Design Council's Design for Planet Festival last week, Sophie Thomas’ closing keynote emphasised the urgent need for design to drive sustainability. With the key message that waste is a design flaw, Sophie’s insights included: 🔄 Today’s economy is only 7.2% circular, with over 100 billion tons of resources extracted annually. Six out of nine planetary boundaries are already exceeded. 📉 80% of a product’s environmental impact is set at concept stage. Designers have immense power to choose materials, reduce waste, and build products meant to last. 🌐 High-demand materials, from gallium in electronics to rare metals for renewables, are at risk. Our design choices must account for these resource limits and prioritise longevity. 💡 Recycling alone won’t solve our waste problem. We need to design for reuse, work across disciplines, and adopt policies like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), where designers consider a product’s full lifecycle. Thank you Design Council for organising such a rich and energising event. 📽️ Watch Sophie’s keynote speech in full here - https://lnkd.in/egdTgp8v. 📰 Read Pete Swift’s in-depth summary of the Festival here - https://lnkd.in/e8Tec-ta. I had a great time at #Acoustics2024 both celebrating 50 years of the Institute of Acoustics, as well as presenting on my favourite topic... 😉 🍃 Massive thanks for everyone's positive and supportive comments, from those in the room, the President himself and those who've got in touch digitally. I guess simple concepts from a simple presenter are a nice counterpoint to all the equations! It really is every built-environment-professional's responsibility to consider planet-first outcomes in their design choices. It CAN seem daunting, with contraindications which exist to the point where (on the surface) it can seem fruitless. But I hope the paper/presentation illustrated that there are straightforward design approaches that we can all take to reduce embodied and operational carbon, promote health, wellbeing, circularity and efficient design. Really this is the absolute minimum we each need to be doing in order to simply slow the worsening of the situation. Wait until next year when I start bothering you about regenerative design 😆. Thanks again - for anyone wanting to review the content of the White Paper on Sustainability in Building Acoustics - you can download the (for consultation) copy here. We will be finalising and issuing formally shortly. https://lnkd.in/ectDkUT8

Every founder knows, self-initiated projects and ideas are hard to build, costly to launch and difficult to grow… All that being said, often the main blocker is getting started. At OMSE, we see self-initiated projects as an opportunity to test ideas and learn about new technologies and ways of working. Last year the climate emergency reached a tipping point and led us to think about our impact as designers… So we came up with one simple question. How can we design better? It led us a journey with PlasticFree.com which culminated in an exhibition during the London festival. We’re thrilled to announce that for the second year in a row, SYSTEM 3E has been named a Deep Tech Pioneer by Hello Tomorrow! 🚀 This recognition isn’t just about us—it’s about the global movement to revolutionize how we build. 🏡 As the construction and infrastructure industries stand at a pivotal moment, the Deep Tech Pioneer nomination highlights the urgent need for: 🔹 Sustainable solutions: zero-waste, low-carbon construction, and energy-efficient designs are no longer aspirations—they are necessities. SYSTEM 3E technology contributes directly to these goals. 🔹 Advanced building materials: by embracing the natural benefits of perlite and the unique properties of the 3E system, we’re pushing boundaries to create structures that are durable, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient. This innovative approach reduces the need for additional materials like Styrofoam, making construction more sustainable and resource-efficient. 🔹 Circular innovation: SYSTEM 3E elements follow the 'cradle-to-cradle' model, allowing them to be reused to create new products after the building's disassembly. This reduces waste, promotes recycling, and helps close the loop in construction. As we look forward to the 10th Hello Tomorrow Global Summit on March 13–14, 2025, in Paris, we’re eager to connect with industry leaders, investors, and fellow innovators to continue pushing the boundaries of deep tech. We’re ready to shape the future—are you? 🌎 Let’s transform the world of construction, together! 🔗 More information and tickets here: https://lnkd.in/g8keznYm #HelloTomorrow #DeepTechDays #SYSTEM3E

What an amazing event it was the Design for Planet Festival 2024 this week. Thank you to the Design Council for organising such an inspiring event. It’s absolutely brilliant to hear from industry peers and see how many feel the topic so strongly and passionately. There has been some great discussions and questions raises around the excessive consumerism society we’ve created and how we all have responsibility in influencing change. Designers can have great power when taking on different projects and injecting a creative perspective. Given the opportunity, they are able to have influence both within business models as well as changing individual behaviour. I have particularly enjoyed listening from Sophie Thomas and how important it is to create circular designs, reducing waste and questioning the linear approach. The debate between the product and business model approaches was also very engaging, bringing new views and perspectives on how we can create more sustainable businesses and products. We heard very interesting views and comments from Dr. Bernice Pan, Efia Mainoo, Lisa Henderson, Pete Swift, Richard Hall and Simeon Rose. Another great debate was held between Katie Hill, James Vaccaro and Martyn Evans Hon FRIBA on making money or changing the system. It is absolutely crucial to create greener alternatives and sustainable models, but it is also very important to consider that for a business to be a business, you need to consider that it must make a profit. It’s paramount to combine solutions that not only create greener businesses, but also viable profitable businesses. And yes, you can have both. Still buzzing from such an interesting and engaging event. Thank you to all speakers. #designforplanet #designcouncil #designforgood #sustainability
