When Thrive leaders wanted to understand more about what drives rapid change in our community, we knew a great place to start was to understand more deeply the impacts of tourism. Tourism floods our community with more than $2B in revenue each year, fueling economic growth, supporting a myriad of amenities and local businesses, and straining our infrastructure and displacing local residents. We wanted to know: How can we shape our tourism economy to build a more resilient and equitable community? Thrive gathered 34 community leaders over nine months to study, propose actions, and think of ways to offer support. From this work, the Greater Access To Tourism Entrepreneurship (GATE) program was created. Learn more about GATE at buff.ly/3w2PVvd or https://buff.ly/4ead5kE

Startup Zone in Charlottetown recently hosted a lovely tourism roundtable that gave trippl an opportunity to hear from local tourism stakeholders. It also gave us all an opportunity to get some reframing guidance from Katie Muldrew with Collective Knot. Katie instructed us all to draw a duck and then post it on the wall, and as you can see that's what we did. No two ducks look the same but they are clearly all ducks. We all perceive the same situation through our own filters and we also all describe that situation in our own unique way. But it is still the same situation that we are all experiencing ... together. This was a very elegant way for us all to be reminded that taking a moment to understand our differences can help us to gain a new appreciation. Very recently I had a conversation with new business advisor and one small thing he said ... I think it may just have been the way that he asked a question ... helped me to reframe the way I was perceiving things in a profoundly positive way. Remember, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, even if doesn't really look like a duck it may still have something very valuable to say .😎 #businessplanning #businesscommunications #letstalktourism

Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s inaugural Tourism Investor Forum kicked off in Mississauga today, bringing together tourism capital seekers and capital providers. In the opening Fireside Chat, entrepreneur and investor Stuart MacDonald said he asks the following questions when meeting with potential business investments: ▶ Are you profitable? ▶ Are consumers going to care? ▶ Are you sustainable? ▶ Can you differentiate yourself? One company that ticked all the boxes for MacDonald was Sherpa°. Co-founder Max Tremaine sat across from MacDonald and the two discussed the two-way street of choosing the right investors and investments. "How do you decide who you’re going to work with?” asked Tremaine. “It’s easy to think of investors as money, but they really are a part of your team … we selected people who had actual care and were earnest about what we were doing.” #investorsforum2024 #tourism

When I look through Brant Economic Development and Tourism’s release, I am reminded of my time at the council table and the challenges of good governance. Progress often hinges on navigating these constant challenges effectively. Being business-friendly and investment-ready encompasses various factors, including the willingness of council to seize opportunities, the capability of staff to execute plans, and the condition of our infrastructure. Critical considerations include the current state of water, sewer, and roads, and the resources required (time and costs) to upgrade them to a state of readiness. We must assess how “shovel-ready” our employment lands are for new businesses considering a move to Brant County and explore future opportunities for expanding existing businesses. Having met with the staff at Brant County during a sit-down with our team, I am confident that their logistical approach, which includes community input and stakeholder consultations, will not only serve the business community well but will also benefit the broader population. #EconomicDevelopment #Brant #CommunityGrowth #BusinessInnovation #SustainableFuture #Tourism #InvestInBrant #EconomicStrategy #PostPandemicRecovery #DarrenShaw, #SIOR, #AustinRandall
In response to the transformed economic landscape and shifting dynamics following the COVID-19 pandemic, the County has developed a refreshed Economic Development Strategy aimed at leveraging past successes while adapting to the evolving business environment. This new strategy, which was approved by County of Brant Council in May, is designed to bolster and broaden the local economy, providing a roadmap for economic development and tourism initiatives over the short, medium, and long term. “Recognizing the need to adapt, we embarked on updating the Economic Development Strategy,” said Zach Gable, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. “The process included analyzing the current landscape through community consultation. This allowed us to gain insight into our strengths, challenges, opportunities and inspirations. With the goal being to ensure that the strategy reflects the needs and potential of our community, it paves the way for sustainable growth and development." Four key themes emerged from this process, forming the foundation of the new strategy: - being business friendly and investment ready - capitalizing on existing tourism, arts, and culture asset - future-proofing downtown areas to create vibrant, mixed-use community cores; - developing a diversified business community to ensure a resilient and sustainable economy Under these themes and through stakeholder’s collaboration, 47 actionable economic development and tourism initiatives were developed that will guide Brant's Economic Development staff and partners over the next four years. “With 47 actionable initiatives in hand, the County is ready to advance its refreshed Economic Development Strategy,” said Gable. “Through these initiatives, our goal is to strengthen downtown cores, bolster infrastructure, and create new jobs and assessment growth. By prioritizing sustainability, innovation and collaboration, Brant aims to build a resilient and prosperous future for all.” Further details and a comprehensive list of the initiatives can be found in the 2024-2027 Economic Development Strategy, visit www.brant.ca/invest for more information.
