📣 More than 400,000 Londoners play their part in the #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign - will you join them? Launched five years ago by the Mayor of London on World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2019, the citywide #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign has now supported nearly 415,000 people across the capital to access free, online suicide prevention training. Take the training today: https://lnkd.in/g2HaSHs Developed by the Zero Suicide Alliance, the free, online training takes around 20 minutes to complete and is designed to show how to have a direct and honest conversation about suicide and mental health with friends and family. The training also helps to break the stigma of talking about mental health, suicidal thoughts and bereavement. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “One life lost to suicide is one too many and we can all play a role in preventing such tragedies by helping one another and talking more about mental health. It’s been five years since I launched the #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign, which offers online suicide prevention training. I’m proud to be one of more than over 400,000 people living or working in London who have completed the training and it’s important that we encourage even more people to take part, so we can continue to build a better London for everyone.” Cllr. Dr Jacqueline Dyer MBE, KCL Hon Fellow, mental health equalities advisor for NHS England and co-lead of Thrive LDN, said: “We know that living and working in London can be stressful, and right now for some it may be overwhelming. That is why we want to encourage as many people as possible to take free, online training to know what to do if a loved one, colleague or stranger is in crisis. “By doing so, we are working towards a city that is stigma free, where people can have a more direct and honest conversation about suicide with fellow Londoners in a safe and sensitive way. Especially considering the challenges so many Londoners – and particularly those from marginalised and racialised communities – have faced in recent years.” Find out more about the campaign: https://lnkd.in/et2ytjFt

Today marks 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲. World Suicide Prevention Day is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about suicide, promoting open conversations about mental health, and breaking the stigma surrounding such a critical issue. Talking about suicide doesn’t have to be scary; it’s an essential conversation that can save lives. Statistics from the ONS reveal a concerning trend: suicide rates in England and Wales have reached their highest level in 25 years. This underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, understanding, and accessible mental health support systems. The construction industry is facing an acute crisis, with two workers tragically taking their own lives every day. Recent ONS data shows that construction has the highest suicide rate of any sector, with those working in the construction sector being four times more likely to take their own lives. Behind these statistics are real individuals—fathers, mothers, siblings, friends—who felt trapped and alone in their struggles. We need to encourage open conversations and offer support, ensuring that no one feels isolated in their darkest moments. Let's create a world where reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Today marks World Suicide Prevention Day which is encouraging people to take action and start a conversation to "Change the narrative on suicide". DWF Belfast has the benefit of mental health first aiders who have arranged for PIPS and Extern to talk to our colleagues tomorrow lunchtime about how to approach this difficult and sensitive topic. It is really important to reduce the stigma and encourage open conversations to prevent suicide. In Northern Ireland the suicide statistics are truly shocking. So we are collectively taking the first step to open the conversation about suicide as it has such devastating and far-reaching effects on individuals and communities. Below is a list of organisations available to anyone who is struggling to cope and needs to talk:- Minding Your Head - find out more about mental health and the issues that can affect it; early warning signs that a mental health issue may be developing; tips on how to maintain good mental health. (part 1) Today, 10th September, is World Suicide Prevention Day. The theme of “We all have a role to play” continues this year so we can work towards embracing a collective responsibility, which is a value held strongly at Overland Speech Therapy. This day also has personal significance and meaning, following the death of my own mum by suicide back in 2020, following many years of mental health difficulties and exacerbated by the sudden loss of dad the year prior. This picture is a flashback to two years ago, when our family attended Lifeline's #outoftheshadows walk, where participants could choose to express themselves through words or pictures. After an open but age-appropriate conversation on the meaning of today, my daughter (3 years old back then) drew a picture of herself, her brother and dog with Grandma Suzie as the "love heart in the sky". In Australia, nearly 10 million people have been affected by suicide and 1 in 2 young people have been impacted by suicide by the time they turn 25. Each year in Australia there are more than 3000 deaths, or around 9 per day, through suicide. In addition to this, 3 million Australians will consider suicide at some point in their lives and more than 65,000 Australians will attempt suicide each year. It is useful to know what services are available that you can support people to access if they are not ok. Support encompasses a wide range of activities, including health promotion, early intervention, crisis, ongoing and aftercare support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, and bereavement support for those impacted. What's something you are proud of? The figures for suicide for 2023 have recently been published by the Office for National Statistics, and it is a bleak read. There were 5,579 suicide deaths in England, a 6% rise from 2022, meaning a rate of 11.1 suicides per 100,000 people. These statistics highlight the urgency for the current and future governments to address mental health issues. I work in the education and mental health sector and can see firsthand that as the need for psychological intervention continues to grow, the harder it becomes for young people and families to access support. Much of the care they can access is often reactive, in place of preventative. What is needed is a societal ethos, where wellbeing and access to wellbeing services is a standard and not a luxury. Mental health is a fundamental human right. Healthcare, both physical and mental, should be accessible to all and this is an issue that should be at the forefront of conversations around suicide prevention. So what is it that I am proud of? Some years ago, I almost became a part of these statistics. On some days I still resent that I was found and saved. It is a strange feeling to try to explain to someone, and a difficult topic to discuss due to the stigma around suicide, self-harm and what suicide prevention might mean or look like. Maybe one day that will change, but for now, this is something I live with. In moments of despair, it is important to try to remember that you are so loved and so valued. Your impact on this world is so much greater than you can imagine. Your life matters deeply to those around you. No matter how impossibly difficult things seem, there is always support available. Samaritans offer a listening ear day or night every day of the year on 116 123 PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide Hopeline is available 24/7 for under 35 year olds and can be reached on 0800 068 4141 I am proud of where I am now. ◼ What is 988? Calls and texts to 988 are directed to a network of partners in communities across the country offering suicide prevention services such as counseling. ◼ Why is it needed? According to Statistics Canada, 4,500 people in this country die by suicide every year — equivalent to 12 people taking their own lives every day. For every death by suicide, at least seven to 10 people either attempted suicide or grieved the loss of someone who took their own life. ◼ Who is 988 for? It's for everyone. There are multiple ways to get in touch. When someone calls 988, they're first presented with a menu. Children, teens, and Indigenous people are among those who can choose to access services specifically geared to them. Children and young adults can also contact Kids Help Phone for mental health support by texting CONNECT to 686 868 from anywhere in Canada. In addition to calling 988, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis will also be able to reach the Hope for Wellness Helpline. Its responders are specifically trained in cultural humility and are available by calling 1-855-242-3310. Services in Cree, Ojibway (Anishinaabemowin), and Inuktitut are provided upon request. https://988.ca/ For education The Centre for Suicide Prevention has a platform called the Buddy Up Program. Many organizations have signed up to be a champion and supporters of this program, including Phoenix Industrial. Feb. 12th -18th, 2024 – The Buddy Up Program has a week full of ways to LIFT UP, through Acts of Kindness to your friends, co-workers, or families. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day... In the UK, suicide remains a critical issue. In 2022, 5,275 people took their own lives, with men accounting for three-quarters of these deaths. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50, and every life lost represents a family, friends, and a community in mourning. We need to #changethenarrativeonsuicide Mental health organisations, like Samaritans, are at the forefront of encouraging open conversations about suicidal thoughts. Just like the image below says, talking about it doesn’t have to be scary. By addressing it, we can make a real difference and potentially save lives. Here are some key things to remember if someone in your life is struggling: 👂Listen without judgment. Offering a safe space for someone to share how they feel can be life-changing 💬Ask directly. Don’t shy away from asking if someone is feeling suicidal. It could give them the opportunity to open up about what they’re going through 👩🏼🤝🧑🏿Be there. Your presence, whether in person or via a phone call, can be a lifeline 📲Signpost to support. Organisations like Samaritans (call 116 123) provide confidential, 24/7 support to anyone in need. Alternatively, they can email Samaritans on jo@samaritans.org or you can ask Samaritans to call them on their behalf. If they call and somebody else picks up, or it goes to voicemail, they won’t leave a message. ❗If they are in immediate danger, a risk to themselves or others, the fastest way to get help is to call an ambulance on 999 It's also important to note that in England, whilst over 4,000 deaths by suicide are recorded annually, for every life lost, there are many more who have considered it... By working together, breaking down stigma, and encouraging open conversations, we can help prevent suicide and support those who need it most #worldsuicidepreventionday #mentalhealthmatters #suicideprevention Lorna Acton Becky Snowden

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day is “Creating Hope through Action”. By encouraging understanding, reaching in and sharing experiences, this theme gives people the confidence to take action. It highlights the fact that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and light in all of us. By creating hope, we can reduce the stigma around suicide and foster a culture where people in need can easily seek help. Meaningful and safe conversations around suicide can also help spread the message that it is okay to talk about suicide. Show your support by lighting a candle today, September 10, for suicide prevention, to remember a loved one & for the survivors of suicide. If in need of support, visit https://lnkd.in/ezU43vUU
