Drones in tactical scenarios nowadays are mostly connected using Wi-Fi technology, not 5G. Contrary to popular belief, 3GPP 5G technology is unsuited to tactical scenarios because it requires subscriptions to a network operator and supporting infrastructure such as cell towers. The main challenge – the inherent detectability of all devices connected to any of these networks, be it Wi-Fi, 3GPP commercial, or private 5G cellular networks. Many companies providing cellular 5G claim they provide encrypted systems. Still, the unmanned devices connected to these networks are easily detected at up to hundreds of kilometers because they generally use signals below 6 GHz. We all know that low probability of detection (LPD) and the associated element of surprise are crucial for success and survival in military scenarios. In this new article in the Battlespace publication, we explore why 5G mmWave technology presents a step change in modern tactical connectivity, offering superior self-healing and Low Probability of Detection (LPD) capabilities. From voice connectivity 🗣️ to digital fires🔥 In the past, tactical networks that could re-configure themselves were limited to long range and speeds of only megabits per second so they were suitable for asymmetric warfare where voice was the primary application. We’re now in an age of potential near-peer, large scale conflicts where forces need substantially more than voice connectivity. They need real-time video sensors, with tactical formations commanders needing to have access to a Common Operating Picture – to see what’s the status of supplies, and to be able to call for digital fires. Furthermore, if they need artillery support, air support, drones, or protection, they should ideally be able to utilise a self-healing gigabit network that is also WAN-connected via satellite or airborne drone relay back to the Command-and-Control network. Maintaining effective communications and surveillance continues to be a significant challenge in modern defence operations. Aircraft carry sensors that can see for miles, but their limited flight duration restricts sustained coverage. Conversely, ships and ground vehicles, while capable of staying in place for extended periods with larger sensors, are limited by the horizon. These constraints create gaps in coverage, making it difficult for coastguards, militaries, and communication networks to maintain a comprehensive view of their operational environment. Airlander addresses these challenges by providing the capacity to carry tonnes of mission systems, sensors, and communications equipment, along with a crew, for up to five days of unrefueled flight endurance. This capability offers up to 100 times the coverage of current surveillance aircraft and drones, significantly enhancing the ability to maintain continuous, reliable surveillance and communications over extended periods. Last year, H3D participated in a US military operational exercise event that simulated radiological threats for training several US-based groups. H3D's M400iC was integrated onto a drone for a mission where a soldier operated the drone and M400iC after arriving on site via helicopter. The soldier was able to use H3D's innovative radiation imaging technology to localize the radiation source in real-time by overlaying an aerial-based radiation image onto an optical image from the drone. You can see in the picture below that the Co-60 source was successfully identified and localized. This was performed in roughly 30 seconds from 10's of meters off the ground. Imaging this radiation source in real time led to a faster, safer completion of the training scenario that minimized the amount of soldiers placed in harm's way. #CBRNE #radiation #drone
