UK Music's Chief Executive Tom Kiehl speaking on the importance of grassroots venues, rehearsal spaces and studios to the music industry's talent pipeline, and how we need more music teachers to ensure that all children have access to a music education. "Last year, music tourism spending increased by 21%, generating a total of 8 billion across local economies, a fantastic achievement. "It's worth remembering, however, that there wouldn't be any music without music creators. "Singers, songwriters, musicians, producers, sound technicians, and everyone else in our industry needs to learn their craft and hone their skills. "The opportunities for many artists are becoming increasingly squeezed with continued problems for music venues, studios and rehearsal spaces, and we need an army of new music teachers to help nurture our talent pipeline on which the music industry relies." Our latest blog post examines Beyoncé's recent Grammy nominations in country categories, highlighting how this phenomenon isn't entirely new. It's great to see these discussions taking place. Many say 'we couldn't possibly', very quickly forgetting the 'Eat out to help out' VAT scheme for restaurants during Covid. Unfortunately, we are stuck with a flaccid, lazy Government and one real solution is to get rid of them and have the discussion with the incoming replacements... if only we had that option. The margin between loss, break-even and profit can be as simple as 2 additional ticket sales who also buy a couple of drinks but every little bit of help will make a massive difference. We built Studio Se7en based on a business plan from data gathered between 2019 and 2022 and since then Quantitative Tightening and the costs of living crisis has meant that everyone has much less disposable income. This is a massive factor which isn't getting mentioned in the press. Massive corporations and financial institutions are syphoning money out of the system. The rich are getting Richer and the poverty line is rising for many.
Data supports that attendance at grassroots music venues has been at an all time high over the last year or so. The demand from communities is there, and venues are going above and beyond to get people in each week, but the goalposts to stay in business keep moving. That's why we fight on a few different fronts - a VAT cut on tickets being just one of them.
