The Crown Estates has been in the news this week, with a new funding deal agreed for King Charles III. But Crown Estates revenue from offshore projects used to be used to address coastal deprivation. And with its marine revenues up 300% in the last two years, there is surely enough to do both. This is a new short Policy Lab Paper making the case for a new Coastal Regeneration Agency. It looks at how coastal areas have been ignored for too long, the lessons from recent government interventions and the potential impact of a new national agency, funded by the Crown Estates. An idea for Maritime UK & the Coastal Partnerships Network perhaps?

Interesting stuff, Tim. And interesting that you tag both Maritime UK and the Coastal Partnerships Network because I wonder if there’s TWO conversations here going on in parallel.   Most of the time organisations which focus on the problems and opportunities of Cleethorpes pay no regard at all to the problems and opportunities of Grimsby just a mile away. And vice versa.   If you want funding to tackle regeneration needs in Cleethorpes you might look to the £187m Coastal Communities Fund, now closed, but if you want to create new opportunities round offshore wind in Grimsby you might look instead to a variety of funding including the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (£129m so far).   On the title you propose I remember Allan Willett, first Chairman of SEEDA, the regional development agency for SE England, discouraging his team from using the word “regeneration”, which he thought sounded negative, making good some deficit. In its place he wanted them to talk about “economic development”, building a new future. That’s a different way of making the same point.     Parallel thoughts and parallel action - though if you lived in Grimsby or Cleethorpes you’d want the two conversations brought together wouldn’t you?
