As leaders, you need to do more than just communication to bring about change. What is it that you need to do? Here's what ICICI Bank's Sandeep Bakhshi did. No one envied Bakhshi when he took over after Chanda Kochhar's infamous exit. He took many steps to steady the ship. But the one thing that everyone noticed and talk about is this: There are two elevators at ICICI's BKC Headquarters in Mumbai. One for the regular staffers and the other for director and above level folks. When Bakhshi took over, he started taking the regular elevator which sent a clear signal that he wanted to build a unified team. Now, ICICI has pulled off a great turnaround for which Bakhshi deserves a lot of credit. But the story that was told and re-told was the elevator one by some employees when Rounak Kumar Gunjan wrote a piece for The Ken. Your actions are the best story you can ever tell. On Competition. The year was 2001. We knew that Aditya Puri and Paresh Sukhtankar were in Singapore for an HDFC Bank investor road show. My company asked me to fly there and get them to our offices to show case our new products. After a hectic day in the Singapore sun, Aditya Puri was kind enough to ask me to join them for a bite. To start some small talk I asked the question - “how did your investors react to your share price being strong, while your competition’s share price has dropped 50% in the last 6 months?” Aditya Puri looked at me and asked if it’s true that his competitors’ share price has halved?? He then turned to Paresh Sukhtankar and checked if I was correct. Paresh confirmed. Aditya Puri had just started building HDFC Bank. He literally had no time to look at his competitors’ share price or products or even happenings in the other bank. He was focussed on his own shop. For the last 25 years+ HDFC Bank has stuck to the same philosophy.
