Alana Spencer, LEED AP BDC, Fitwel Ambassador is the vice president of sustainability at Clayco. At our recent Construction Tech Conference in Chicago, we had a chance to sit down with her to pick her brain about sustainability, technology, construction, and where and how the three meet at Clayco. "We're working to decarbonize 50% by 2030," Alana said, "and then 100% by 2050" For Alana, sustainability is a problem that requires widespread proactivity. "We're really diving in and pioneering ahead on how we can decarbonize from a material level to the operational and efficiency of every single project." She acknowledged the "gap" that often exists between sustainability commitments made at the top level and the implications of said commitment for teams in the field, saying that effective planning requires those realities to be taken into account. "(The strategy) will be annually updated and communicated internally for each of the business units," she said, adding, "and tailored for each of the business units because they are so different." "To me, sustainability means balancing economic, social, and environmental value and understanding their interrelation. More than half of all economic activity is highly dependent on nature and its services. We must become more conscious of our actions and their impacts." — Christina Haupt Toft Christina Haupt Toft is the founder of Circle Consulting, a consultancy that integrates construction and biodiversity to benefit businesses and society. With 15 years of experience in finance and construction, Christina has focused the last five on sustainability and biodiversity in the built environment. Among her achievements is the development of a national method for city nature mapping in extensive collaboration within the industry, including ConTech Lab - en del af Molio. Addressing sustainability challenges in the built environment, Christina highlights the complexity and the novelty of incorporating nature-focused approaches in traditional economic sectors. She emphasises the pivotal role of financial institutions in driving sustainability by incentivising nature-positive assets and discusses the need for innovative construction materials and methods in response to raw material scarcity. 👉 Read the full article on our Journal: https://lnkd.in/ep_6ikNN

📑The latest report from the Urban Land Institute' programme C Change is out now! 📑 Carbon pricing plays a pivotal role in enabling companies to take meaningful steps toward achieving their sustainability goals. During last summer’s workshops, industry experts from diverse sectors and various points along the value chain came together to share their insights. This global assembly brought unique perspectives to the table, fostering enriching discussions and a mix of subjective opinions and consensus. These collaborative efforts culminated in the release of the paper, marking a significant milestone. As a contributor, Deepthi Ravi, our Sustainability Coordinator, felt that by providing her insights as an architecture practitioner she could offer a more holistic perspective on carbon, financial considerations, and ultimately, sustainability. 🌍 Sustainability in Construction: A New Perspective This semester, I explored one of the most critical topics in the modern construction industry: how to make projects sustainable. Sustainability is not just about reducing environmental harm, it’s about creating long-term value for all stakeholders throughout a project’s lifecycle. From integrative design to dematerialization, I discovered that sustainable practices drive both innovation and efficiency while promoting responsibility. My biggest insight was Sustainability isn’t just a technical challenge, it’s a mindset. Shifting our perspective to prioritize sustainable goals from the start can unlock solutions that benefit the environment, society, and the economy altogether. #التشييدـالمستدام #Sustainable_Construction #Sustainability

"Huge thanks to Harris Evolution for putting together such a fantastic event last week focused on ‘Building Sustainability Into Every Project’. The speakers gave insights including unexpected sustainability solutions which came about as solutions to other construction issues, without sustainability as the main driver. As someone deeply invested in sustainable construction, it was refreshing to chat with trade professionals about the practical side, who described the talks that evening as ‘eye-opening’. A brilliant event, thanks Harris Evolution! 🌿🏗️ #Sustainability #Construction"
