As we honor National Engineers Week, we turn our focus to water engineering and its impact on the everyday world around us. The work of water engineers provides the underpinning for almost any development project, delivering critical infrastructure and promoting economic growth. One example is in the City of Tracy, where the installation of a 6,300 gpm pump station and a partially-buried 2.0 mg concrete water storage tank on a two-acre site at Cordes Ranch provided the basic infrastructure. This enabled development of the entire 1,200-acre site into the International Park of Commerce, and the economic returns have been phenomenal. “The tax revenue from this development grew more than tenfold in a ten year time frame, while adding thousands of jobs,” recalls William James Miller, Jr, PE, manager of K+W’s Water Development Services. “All of it was supported by the water storage and booster pump station.” Water engineering projects are often the linchpins that determine a project’s initial viability; please join K+W in saluting water engineers and the economic impact they unlock as we celebrate engineers across the nation.
