The Interdisciplinary Sleep Medicine Centre is one of many departments in this institution and it is one of the few facilities in Germany where sleep disorders of all kinds are examined and treated from childhood to old age. The centre includes an outpatient clinic, an inpatient sleep laboratory for all sleep-related problems and all forms of sleep disorders, and an outpatient sleep laboratory within the Charité outpatient health centre for patients with sleep-related breathing disorders. The staff consists of pneumologists, neurologists, ENT physicians, cardiologists, engineers, specialized medical technologists, and nurses. Reasons why you as a doctor need to prioritize rest, backed up by studies- 1. Rest Reduces Burnout: Burnout among physicians is a well-documented issue, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that adequate rest and sleep are critical in reducing burnout among physicians. The study emphasizes that doctors who prioritize rest are less likely to experience burnout, which can enhance their overall well-being and job satisfaction (Shanafelt et al., 2015). 2. Improved Cognitive Function and Decision-Making: Sleep deprivation has a significant impact on cognitive function, particularly on tasks that require attention, memory, and decision-making. A study in the Annals of Surgery demonstrated that surgeons who had less rest performed worse on complex decision-making. Prioritizing rest helps maintain cognitive sharpness and reduces the risk of errors in patient care (Taffinder et al., 1998). 3. Enhanced Patient Safety: Physician fatigue is linked to an increased risk of medical errors, which can have serious consequences for patient safety. A landmark study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that interns working traditional 24-hour shifts made 36% more serious medical errors compared to those with more rest. Ensuring doctors are well-rested is crucial for maintaining high standards of patient care and safety (Landrigan et al., 2004). 4. Better Physical and Mental Health: Chronic sleep deprivation and lack of rest are associated with a higher risk of developing various health issues, including cardiovascular disease, depression, and anxiety. A study published in The Lancet highlighted that doctors who regularly experience insufficient rest are more susceptible to these conditions. Prioritizing rest is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health, which in turn, allows physicians to perform their duties more effectively (Czeisler et al., 1999). 5. Increased Longevity and Career Satisfaction: • A study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that physicians who prioritize rest and work-life balance have greater career satisfaction and are more likely to remain in the profession longer. This is particularly important in preventing early retirement or career changes due to exhaustion or dissatisfaction (Shanafelt et al., 2003). Prioritizing rest helps sustain a long and fulfilling medical career. These points highlight the importance of rest for doctors, not only for their well-being but also for the safety and care of their patients.

A report commissioned by the UK government was published last week, which revealed that bias in some medical devices, including pulse oximeters, can put people of ethnic minorities at risk of poorer healthcare. Read on for more about the report's findings, and why AcuPebble avoids these biases in its diagnosis of sleep apnoea 👩⚕️ Pulse oximeters are worn on the patient's hand (typically the fingertip), and work by shining red and infrared light through the skin. They then analyse the light that either passes through the finger, or is reflected back, to provide an estimation of the percentage of oxygen in the patient's blood. However, the "Equity in Medical Devices: Independent Review" found that pulse oximeters can overestimate the amount of oxygen in the blood of people with dark skin. This means that, for instance when diagnosing conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), if that diagnosis is heavily dependent on or solely obtained with oximeters, it could be less accurate or even wrong for these patients. This also applies to other alternative technologies that operate on the basis of the same physical principle (i.e. shining red and infrared light). In contrast, Acurable's wearable medical device AcuPebble is based on acoustic sensing - that is, the sounds generated by the body's internal processes like breathing and cardiac function, and it is through this that it's able to automatically and accurately determine whether the patient has obstructive sleep apnoea 🔊 Because it uses sound, not light, our device isn't affected by the same biases as those found in pulse oximeters or any light based devices, and has been clinically validated, demonstrating it can produce an accurate OSA diagnosis in patients from any ethnic group. The combination of increasing needs for rehabilitation and decreasing resources ask for a focus on blended care or telerehabilitation systems that have the potential to enable therapists to monitor and assist stroke patients in achieving high-intensity upper extremity exercise in the home environment. With an iterative user-centred approach for home-based upper extremity rehabilitation using wearable motion sensors for subacute stroke patients we performed a requirement analysis. The results were systematically analysed and prioritised into “must-haves”, “should-haves”, and “could-haves”. We formulated 33 functional requirements: eighteen must-have requirements related to blended care (2), exercise principles (7), exercise delivery (3), exercise evaluation (4), and usability (2); ten should-haves; and five could-haves. Six movement components, including twelve exercises and five combination exercises, are required. For each exercise, appropriate exercise measures were defined. As such this study provides an overview of functional requirements, required exercises, and required exercise measures for home-based upper extremity rehabilitation using wearable motion sensors for stroke patients, which can be used to develop home-based upper extremity rehabilitation interventions. Moreover, the comprehensive and systematic requirement analysis used in this study can be applied by other researchers and developers when extracting requirements for designing a system or intervention in a medical context. Just received the latest edition of Oncology Nursing Society's CJON ! I am ALWAYS overjoyed when I see an exercise study in it! As nurses, we are frontline to patient complaints and symptom management. Cancer-related fatigue is the MOST common side effect across all cancer diagnoses and treatments YET it is underassessed and under addressed. This article brings to light the differences that the oncology nurse can make on fatigue and quality of life through home based, unsupervised exercise instruction. I particularly love how they incorporated family education when there were barriers to the participants' reaching PA (physical activity) goals. Lifestyle changes are so much more powerful when one has support on their side! I encourage you to check out this article! #exerciseismedicine #exerciseoncology #oncologynurse #oncologynursing #fightthefatigue #movemoresitless #movemore #movementismedicine #symptommanagement #cancerrelatedfatigue #fatigue https://lnkd.in/eBtcrkDG
