https://lnkd.in/eTcWJ8Vz Every single child in care deserves the very minimum of a loving family home, albeit a substitute one, and rightly it’s high on the government’s agenda. It’s not that they’ve got the idea wrong, it’s the ‘how’ they get wrong. 👉Precious funding is spent over and over again on reviews, research, pilots, and recruitment schemes, they are usually a repeat of the ones that came before them, most talking about how we must start putting the children first. However, this begs the question; if you have not already been doing this for all these years, then who have you been putting first? #FosterCare #FosterWiki

30 yrs working in & for the care sector. A specific interest & expertise in commissioning & procuring services for children in care. Led a review of the national fostering contract. Views personal.
Yesterday I met with a group of local authority commissioners & we talked about children who are formally assessed as needing residential care at a very young age. How some of these therapeutic homes enable children to heal enough to be able to move positively into long term stable foster care. The commissioners said that therapeutic homes with models that prepare young children for family living have programmes which can be 18 months to 3 yrs long (dep on individual need). However, commissioners find it extremely difficult to get funding for this approved. Even if there is evidence that a programme has a high success rate. It’s the fact there’s a ‘chance’ the child may remain in res care until they leave care. Decision makers worry about the cost of this & the impact of a child not experiencing a positive family like setting. So the approach ends up being one where a lower level of intervention is tried instead of a proactive use of therapeutic residential care. This often leads to multiple breakdowns which is understandably awful for children, some of whom bounce around the system ending up in crisis made, low quality & high cost, distant, unregistered provision. The overall cost (not just financial) of the child’s time in care then far outweighs what it would have cost if a therapeutic res programme had been proactively used. Commissioners told me they are under pressure to find therapeutic res care that can take the child through the healing process much quicker. (Which to my knowledge isn’t something that’s possible … Time is essential for healing). I’m hearing more and more about these sort of challenging situations & the trajectory is immensely worrying. There’s such a desperate need to better understand how well specified res care could and should be used for some children. And how it can be an essential part of enabling children to then experience life in a positive family setting. #stepacross #interdependency #investinchildren #leavecarefromfostercare

💥Good News Story💥 An 18-year-old faced an uncertain future after being placed in a psychiatric ward on his birthday and later released to a homeless youth refuge. He was referred to Raven Community Care by a well-respected OOHC agency that had struggled to engage with him prior to turning 18. Our team dedicated countless hours of pro-bono work to support him during this challenging time. Here’s what we achieved together: ✅ Priority Housing Application: He was placed on the waitlist for priority housing, opening doors to stable and affordable accommodation. ✅ First Approved NDIS Plan: We secured his first NDIS plan, ensuring access to essential support services. ✅ Private Accommodation Secured: With our help, he found private accommodation, offering a safe and stable home with rent subsidized by RCC. ✅ Aftercare Financial Plan Access: We assisted him in accessing his aftercare financial plan to furnish his new place, helping him create a comfortable space. ✅ Linked with a specifised NDIS employment agency to secure full time employment. This young man’s story reflects a larger issue. The system has failed him, as it has for many others who should be receiving the support needed to transition into adulthood. Our young people deserve better, they deserve a solid plan to set them up for success, and it’s crucial that we continue to advocate for the changes necessary to ensure they are not left behind! #OOHC #Successstory

The launch of Centra's tri-annual Community Health Needs Assessment has begun! 🚀🏥📣 Every three years, Centra administers Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs) for each region where its four hospitals are located. These CHNAs help Centra identify the strengths and resources available to meet the children, youth and families in central and southern Virginia. The assessments focus on identifying #healthdisparities, gaps and unmet needs along with identifying community resources, strengths and perceptions. Ultimately, the results of the CHNAs will guide Centra and its community partners as they develop strategic plans to address identified needs while also informing how Centra invests its funds and resources back into the community to address identified needs. Some initiatives that occurred as a result of the previous assessment which was administered in 2021 include Centra increasing access to #primarycare in the Farmville region, opening the emPATH Unit in Lynchburg and supporting the expansion of childcare services in Bedford. This year, Centra is partnering with the Virginia Department of Health's Central Virginia Health District, Piedmont Health District and Pittsylvania/Danville Health District with the goal of lifting the voices of as many community members as possible. Community leaders from across the region (like Bedford pictured below!) have already begun meeting to collaborate as part of the assessment process. If your child or young person has SEND needs in school, there can be times when they are really struggling, and in some cases find the environment just too much to cope with. More is happening in Cambridgeshire schools to help them, and this is a chance to hear about this work and give feedback about how this could help your child. Pinpoint provide help and information to parents and carers of children and young people aged 0-25 with additional needs and disabilities in Cambridgeshire. No formal diagnosis is required to access support from Pinpoint – a child may be on a waiting list, accessing services, had a referral turned down, or just be struggling. We offer signposting and events for all things SEND and are the Parent Carer Forum for Cambridgeshire. Pinpoint also give parent carers opportunities to have a say and get involved in improving local services. You will be sent an email containing the Zoom link to access the session 2 days before, 2 hours before and at the start of the session. Please do check your junk mail and spam folders as these emails sometimes end up there! Be comfortable at Pinpoint sessions - You can keep your camera off and stay on mute and simply join us and other parent carers who “get it” from your sofa 😊
