♻ The European Union's new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR) seeks to ensure greater circularity for packaging. What does the PPWR mean for deposit return schemes (DRSs)? 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/dU7mTFvH Bilyana Ignatova, VP Public Affairs and Head of EU Policy at TOMRA, walks through the new regulation, and how it impacts drink container recycling. “The PPWR recognizes DRS as an effective system for single-use and reusable beverage packaging, and provides the framework to drive performance towards 90% separate collection by 2029,” she explains. 🎯 Coming into effect in early 2025, it aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging, and boost high-quality recycling and the circular economy. It harmonizes rules across the EU to create a level playing field and consistent framework. ⚖️ “With the commitment and innovation of all stakeholders, we can achieve a circular future for Europe’s packaging,” adds Bilyana Ignatova. #CircularEconomy #SustainablePackaging #Recycling

Last week in Brussels we sat with stakeholders and decision makers to discuss how to make packaging circular and what can flexible packaging do to help. Three takeaways: 1) ⏱️Industry wants Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) approved and looks forward to timely and efficient secondary legislation to ensure legal clarity 2) ♻️ Packaging suppliers will do their part simplifying packaging design, but Member States need to increase efforts setting state of the art infrastructures for collection, sorting and recycling to allow companies to meet market access PPWR recycling targets in 2035 3) 🎯Packaging minimization is an important source of packaging waste prevention together with the uptake of other packaging solutions such as refill and reuse

Since we are more than halfway through #PlasticFreeJuly, we are highlighting some of the ways plastic in packaging will be reduced when the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is implemented. ♻️Recycled Content Requirements: PPWR will mandate minimum recycled content in packaging. For example, single-use plastic bottles must contain 30% recycled content by 2030 and 65% by 2040. This will significantly reduce the use of virgin plastics. 🚫Ban on Plastic Packaging: To cut unnecessary waste, PPWR will ban plastic packaging for certain uses, such as fruit and vegetables. This is a major step towards reducing single-use plastics. 🌱Compostable Standards: "Compostable" will truly mean compostable. The European Commission will set clear specifications for compostable packaging, ensuring it meets strict environmental standards. It was a long and difficult process to get EU policymakers to agree on the new packaging rules but yesterday’s vote in the European Parliament means that we have passed another important milestone. Having the legislation finalised is however only the beginning of the end; there will be almost 40 delegated and implementing acts that will need to be developed in the coming years. So still some work to be done!
The European Parliament today approved a groundbreaking deal that positions Europe as a leader in sustainable packaging policy. Packaging waste has been steadily increasing over the past decades at a concerning rate. The new EU packaging rules aim to reverse this trend. From binding targets on waste reduction, on increasing reusable packaging and on integrating recycled content in plastic packaging, to mandatory deposit-return systems, the new rules will transform the way our products are packaged, eliminating unnecessary packaging and removing harmful chemicals (PFAS) from food packaging. Despite some challenges in getting it adopted, this law is a step in the right direction towards the much needed reduction in our resource use and more sustainable production and consumption patterns which will make Europe more resilient and self-sufficient. #packaging #wastereduction #circularity #ppwr

𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐏𝐖𝐑 🙌 The PPWR, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, is considered a milestone on the path to more sustainable packaging and less packaging waste in the EU. Reusable and recyclable packaging should become the standard. The regulation also aims to harmonize packaging standards and requirements across the EU and improve environmental protection. The planned reusable quotas and the ban on certain single-use packaging will particularly affect some industries: in addition to the food industry, this includes the hospitality and hotel sectors. Recent legislative proposals in Slovakia aimed at amending the existing Deposit Return System (DRS) have raised concerns within the recycling industry. These amendments, proposed by Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba, could potentially impact the system's effectiveness and its alignment with both Slovak and EU legislative standards. Since its launch in 2022, Slovakia's DRS has exemplified success, achieving over 90% collection rates for single-use beverage packaging in 2023, significantly surpassing EU targets ahead of schedule. This initiative has not only boosted recycling rates but also reduced environmental litter, setting a benchmark for similar initiatives across Europe. However, the proposed changes, which suggest an increase in state oversight, have alarmed key industry stakeholders, including EUROPEN, the Brewers of Europe, and Zero Waste Europe. These organisations have voiced their concerns through a joint letter, calling for the withdrawal of the draft amendments and advocating for a more collaborative approach to preserve the system's integrity and ensure its continued success. What do you think is essential for an efficient DRS system❓ For the latest updates and detailed insights into recycling legislation and practices, visit us at ReCoRe: https://lnkd.in/eC5-Yq7Y #RecyclingLegislation #Sustainability #europeanunion #circulareconomy

Have you seen the news? 🌍♻️ 🎯 The Deposit Return Scheme (#DRS) has now come into force in England and Northern Ireland and is a major step towards more sustainable waste management. From October 2027, this system will help improve the recycling rates of single-use drink containers. 📊 And the challenge is significant. 14 billion plastic bottles and 9 billion drink cans are used annually in Britain, with small plastic bottles and non-alcoholic cans representing 43% of the volume of all litter. (source: Keep Britain Tidy)! 🔄 So, how will DRS work? Consumers will pay a refundable deposit when purchasing drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans. This deposit can be redeemed by returning the empty containers to designated collection points. ✅ This concept is nothing new. Similar schemes across Europe have already delivered impressive results: - Up to 90% separate collection rates across participating countries - 70-80% reduction in container-related litter - Superior quality recyclable materials that drive higher market values - 40% reduction in drink containers reaching our oceans 📈 But the real question is: how will that impact MRFs across the country? The scheme will require some adaptation from MRFs as it is expected to: - modify the composition of materials collected at the kerbside and thus the materials processed in MRFs - change the flow of materials as the DRS will divert materials away from kerbside collections - potentially require new equipment investments for optimised sorting BUT, while the scheme might have some impacts, a 2024 report by consulting firm Monksleigh, projected a 12% increase in dry mixed recycling volumes over the next seven years, even accounting for DRS-diverted materials. 2027 may seem distant, but preparation starts now. Our team is committed to supporting MRFs through this transition so get in touch! #Recycling #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #UKRecycling #Sustainability
