Let's talk about rPET ♻️ PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is widely used for plastic drink containers and packaging because of its versatility and durability. However, making PET from scratch uses a lot of oil – about a quarter of a liter for just one bottle. rPET is the circular alternative. It's made from recycled PET bottles and containers, cutting down on the need for new raw materials. This means a much smaller carbon footprint and 79% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Impressively, a single PET bottle can be recycled up to 20 times (maybe even more)! Here’s why rPET matters: 🔄 rPET reduces the demand for virgin plastic, conserving energy and raw materials. 🌍 Utilizing rPET minimizes plastic waste in landfills and oceans, contributing to a cleaner planet. 📉 The production of rPET emits significantly less CO2 compared to virgin PET, aiding in the fight against climate change. At TOMRA, we are dedicated to transforming waste into valuable resources like rPET. By this circular alternative, we’re not just recycling – we’re revolutionizing the lifecycle of plastics. Learn how rPET is made and why it’s key for plastics circularity: https://lnkd.in/dhh7NbKy #CircularEconomy #PlasticRecycling #TOMRA

The plastic pollution to the environment, especially to the ocean, has been draw a lot of attention from the public which results some negative impact to the entire value chain of plastic industry. Besides, most of commonly used plastics, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), etc. are made from fossil fuel as the raw material, including naphtha from crude oil, methanol from coal gasification, etc. Those are all generating heavily carbon emission to the environment, and hence the plastics made from those conventional process is of high carbon impact. Since the material that is made of recycled plastics, PCR (post-consumer recycled) resin provides the efficient solution to plastic wasting and pollution. Instead of being sent to a local landfill, used items such as bottles, milk jugs, buckets, and industrial products can be broken down, melted and reconstructed to make a resin material—PCR plastic, which could be used to remake the products that applied in the area of logistics, consumer goods, etc. As the senior practitioner in plastic industry, we would like to demonstrate circular economy to society and support our customers to contribute to the environment through our tailor-made one-stop plastic recycling solution. Can the use of #rpet help you to reduce plastic pollution? Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) is a versatile material that can help reduce plastic waste in landfills and oceans. RPET can be used to make many products, including activewear, outdoor gear, bedding, and stuffing for toys or pet beds. It's also primarily used for food packaging. rPET has many benefits, including: - It can help reduce the amount of #plasticwaste that ends up in landfills and oceans. - RPET production requires 70% less energy than virgin plastic production. #recycling one plastic bottle saves the equivalent of three hours of energy from a 60w light bulb. - By using rPET, companies increase demand for post-consumer PET, which in turn supports more recycling and diverts plastic waste from oceans. - rPET bottles have a lower #carbonfootprint than Virgin PET bottles. - RPET is widely recyclable, reusable, and sturdy. Embracing rPET isn't just about making eco-conscious choices; it's about driving meaningful change for our planet and future generations. Let's take the leap towards #sustainability together! Today is an important day for the plastic recycling industry as the #EuropeanParliament adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and rejected the resolution on asking the European Commission to withdraw its implementing act on Mass Balance #FuelExempt. This is a huge step forward in our collective work towards circularity and a sustainable future. Adoption of PPWR and clarity on #MassBalance Fuel Exempt to be the procedure for calculating the recycled content of plastic packaging will drive the necessary investments in technology advancements and scalability. Therefore, leveraging existing production ecosystems instead of building new ones, which would significantly avoid additional energy and carbon footprints. Plastic must be circular, and we all need to collaborate across the value chain to make this a reality. We strongly believe that advanced recycling will be a game changer in meeting the PPWR recycled content targets of 2030 and 2040. In case you are interested to learn more about mass balancing, we suggest the following videos by Stephan Roest from Borealis: The Mass Balance Approach Explained (https://lnkd.in/eWtmCY7u) and Shell Chemicals: https://lnkd.in/enD6pcRQ #BlueAlp #BlueAlpTechnology #circularplastics #Pyrolysis #advancedrecycling #PPWR

“Approximately 6% of the mass of plastic waste brought to the Plastics Recycling Facility is released as microplastic pollution to receiving waters, but rises to up to 13% if no filtration is provided to the wash water.” This study found that the mechanical forces of various plastic recycling processes create siginificant quantities of microplastics that eventually are getting washed downstream. Creating a more sustainable future is complex. We aren’t going to find ‘perfect’ and for sure recycling has a great role to play. But revealing hidden consequences is important. Credit to Erina Brown and her colleagues for this one. For us here with PluumoPlus, we are taking the very focused approach of replacing single-use expanded polystyrene from life science cold chains. Conventional wisdom says that such plastics are unavoidable given the protective requirements. Conventional wisdom also said that it was a crazy idea to turn surplus feathers into thermal packaging. #microplastics #singleuseplastic #sustainablepackaging https://lnkd.in/eVwcWCmU
