We are honored to be included in Newsweek’s 2025 list of America's Greenest Companies, which highlights the top 500 businesses making a positive impact on the planet while setting the standard for environmentally conscious practices in their respective industries. In the Specialty Finance category, HASI ranked as the top company, receiving a perfect five out of five stars. Plant-A Insights and GIST Impact, in partnership with Newsweek, determined the rankings based on a comprehensive analysis of data from both public and private companies operating in the U.S. Each company was assessed across more than 25 parameters, categorized into four key areas: Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Water Usage, Waste Generation, and Sustainability Data Disclosure & Commitments. Delighted to be joining the The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Board of Directors in an Observer role as Materials & Chemical Value Chain Advisor. Most people are unaware of the extent to which our societies rely on fossil-based carbon. Carbon is a primary chemical component in the makeup of all living things. It’s a key ingredient in the threads in our clothes, the building materials in our homes and the fuel we use to power vehicles. While power can be carbon-free thanks to advances in renewable energy, everyday products like textiles, packaging and consumer goods need carbon. There are initiatives to replace carbon-based ingredients with more environmentally friendly materials, but the chemicals and materials sectors are often left behind when it comes to policies and incentives as the world focuses on carbon accounting or renewable energy. By 2050 on current projections, we will need 2 planets worth of resources. It is clear we can’t continue as we do today. This is an existential problem, and companies (more so than governments or world leaders) are already working to find ways to safeguard production systems and it is an opportunity for RSB to highlight the benefits of a robust and trusted supply chain, especially with increased risks associated with green washing claims for many materials sectors, especially the textiles and packaging sectors. In March SBTi showed its teeth by calling firms that had made commitments on #netzero but failed to keep them. A few weeks later and the charity found itself in unfamiliar territory: cast as the bad guy for giving firms a soft option to netzero by increasing #carbonoffsetting allowances. “SBTi has been on an upward trajectory for a few years and this is the first thing that has gone wrong for them,” Mike Barry tells me in my piece trying to pick through all this for Just Food and food companies. A couple of teasers: - 22 of the 521 food and drink processing companies have had their near-term (five- to ten-year) commitment ‘removed’, including JBS, Farm Frites, Tata Group Linden Foods. JBS has also had its long-term commitment removed, as have 27 other food and drink processors, including Marfrig Global Foods Nomad Foods Carlsberg Group - the new FLAG guidance for agri-food has created issues for sure, but the likes of Danone have managed ok - the issues are also more with longer term targets so maybe companies are focusing all efforts on the 2030 ones? - there are definitely those who are disappointed in what’s happened around offsetting in the netzero standard (though no decisions have been made): the problems weaken confidence in the already controversial landscape of decarbonisation. “It’s really important that they rapidly re-energise and build confidence in SBTi,” says Peter Hajipieris, “because otherwise it just lends oxygen to those who don’t want to engage”. Earth Day at EAB 💙🌎 As a member of the Analyst Leadership Roundtable Board, I was thrilled to host our second annual Earth Day Clean Up! We had 10+ EABers join us for an hour of their workday to clean up a park close by our office. Together, we collected more than three bags of trash, safeguarding our water system and land from microplastics and other contaminants while beautifying our local community. But our work doesn't end here. As leaders in our respective fields, it's incumbent upon us to continue championing sustainability initiatives year-round. Whether it's reducing our carbon footprint, advocating for renewable energy, or promoting eco-friendly practices in the workplace, there are countless ways we can make a positive impact. Let's use today as a reminder of the power we have to effect change. By working together and harnessing our collective expertise, we can create a brighter, greener future.
