“Almost none of the political candidates are likely to have any knowledge of ecology, and yet they will be passing legislation that has an ecological consequence.” - Ian Redmond, Head of Conservation at Ecoflix and Co-Founder at Rebalance Earth Ian’s keynote speech at the TTI Nature Investment Summit took us through a journey, emphasizing the interconnectedness of nature and the vital roles that species like blue iguanas, gorillas, and elephants play in maintaining ecosystem stability. Leaders can no longer take a back seat on these issues. The information is there, and it’s time to take action. It was great to attend Finance Earth, Pollination, Blue Marine Foundation and The Crown Estate workshop today on establishing high integrity marine natural capital markets in the UK. The objectives were to refine the outputs of the synthesis report, to critically assess the feasibility of some of the recommendations and to prioritise actions. A few key points were: 🌱 Create effective working partnerships to bring together the existing knowledge base for marine habitats and natural capital sectors to avoid duplicating efforts, creating centralised data repositories and sharing of best practices 🔍 Priorise action into key road blocks such as licensing and ownership 💷 The money and willingness to invest is there, however there is currently too much uncertainty and risk. Verified methods and standards are needed to unlock this capital 🪙 Create a buyers alliance and work with economists to define what sort of products they would fund I am looking forward to seeing the road map that is created from this event in early 2024, and developing the exciting opportunities that I am working on to address some of the above points, including a UK seagrass biodiversity monitoring consortium and accrediting eDNA as a coastal biodiversity monitoring tool.

The new National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy has so many great minds and big presidential force behind it. A much needed game-changer for Our Ocean and domestic coasts.
I’m thrilled to report that the White House released today the United States' new National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy, a product of many months of work by a dedicated interagency team that built on many years of work by a wide range of dedicated scientists, managers, conservationists, policy-makers, and communities around the country and the world. I am honored to have co-led the writing team for the strategy and deeply thankful to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and to all who contributed to this team effort, including the 34 organizations and individuals who submitted nearly 300 public comments to the Public Request for Information. Now that the Strategy is official, our challenge is to make the dream real! Everyone is touched by the ocean and we all have a part to play. Storytelling is the most important trick up one's sleeve in nature financing❓ Biodiversity financing is all about the narrative. Yes, even nature's value is defined by a story! I'll explain 👇 Investors are more likely to invest in nature that, because of their investment, increasingly contributes to climate change! However, when adding other improvements to lower-valued investments, such as ecosystem restoration, community engagement, human health, ... (the co-benefits) the value of the investment increases. This is called 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. ➕➕➕ The more additionality a project creates, the higher its value! So, it's very important to narrate in detail each aspect of your project to give it the value it deserves. If you want to know more on this, talk to Dan Exton from rePLANET or to Tim Coles

Today we are shining a light on Nature^Squared. Working to connect ecology and economics, they partner with farmers, companies, governments, universities, and NGOs to deliver tailor-made projects for a better planet for mankind and nature. Capitals Coalition is a community of over 400 organizations and individuals from across the globe, united to advance the capitals approach to decision-making. As part of the SUSTAIN project, Nature^Squared recently released a thought paper exploring how we can accelerate business action on biodiversity loss and create transformational change to align with Nature Positive goals. The paper — ‘𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞: 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 looks at the role of policy and regulation in catalyzing business action on nature and creating an enabling environment for achieving the goals and targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Continuing my investigation of how to define "nature positive" - the Nature Positive Initiative has a clear definition that involves "retaining and restoring 1) species, 2) ecosystems, and 3) natural processes at all scales (global, national and landscape level)." "Examples of these metrics include richness, distribution, abundance and extinction risk of species, extent and ecological integrity of habitat, hydrological integrity, migration patterns, and carbon sequestration and storage." It's surprising that more people haven't pointed me in the direction of the NPI. This consortium of NGOs boasts some of the biggest global names in conservation and the environment. For ecologically-minded entrepreneurs looking for business ideas, I can't think of a better place to start. Check out their website to learn more about this important initiative. https://lnkd.in/eppRNzuD

🍱 📖 Join us for our Lunch&Learn: Biodiversity - Risk and Opportunities! 🍱 📖 🌍 Biodiversity is currently declining faster than at any other time in human history (species disappearing at a rate 10 to 1000 times higher than the normal ‘background’ rate of extinction), representing major risks for the environment, sustainable development and global supply chains. We will discuss with our two specialists Elise Broussous and Jaime Andrés Riaño Sánchez about: 👉 How to integrate biodiversity risks and opportunities in the investment and financing strategies? 👉 Which metrics are most appropriate when considering biodiversity? 👉 Is TNFD a game changer or not? 🙏 Thank you Irina Paes for being a moderator!

It's been in the back of my mind for months, I struggled around finding the right fit, topic, angle to start but now... as imperfect as it can be, here it is : I am launching a newsletter or as I prefer to call it an online logbook : "The Reefs Rebuilder's Journal" Fancy uh ? 😬 In there, my goal is to keep track and document the journey that it's surely going to be building a new impact driven social enterprise from scratch here in France, focusing on marine biodiversity, oysters reefs restoration, seaweed farming, and sea meadows preservation. All done with one single purpose, efficiently tackling climate change and trying my best to leave a still livable world to my children, and hopefully yours. I'll be talking about sea farming for sure, but more broadly about entrepreneurship, impact, the crucial challenge of maintaining personal/familial balance as we go, China, Europe, sustainability, cool projects and people I am lucky enough to meet, paving your own way, success and failures, trying to do good... If any of that resonates with you feel free to dive in, read this first issue and maybe subscribe for more. You need more teasing ? Alright then... In here you'll learn : 💡 A bit more on how this project came to be 🖐 Why it can be beneficial to sometimes just "let go" 🌿 How the Vincent Doumeizel's Seaweed Revolution gave me Hope after I had lost it in the first place. (04/06 Happy Seaweed Day by the way !) 📣 And a shout out to these amazing guys whose work, among many others, inspired me to start this (links to their well worth the read newsletters included) Naman Bajaj making every problem his problem and highlighting clever solutions and ideas from around the world to solve everyone's problems. Oliver Dauert fighting eco anxiety with biodiversity and putting marketing skills at the service of impact projects Guillaume Fourdinier diving into a new sector everytime, analysing the issues in depth and offering "just do it" ideas to build your company around. I sincerely wish I can one day convey 1/100th of the value you bring me and everyone else reading you. See you out there !
