Message from the founder: I have thought long and hard—scratching and restarting, as many business leaders do when drafting their mission statement. In many ways, I put it off because I wasn’t sure what defined our organization. A mission statement is powerful—it should speak to the team about shared goals, to clients and customers about our direction and efforts, and to strategic partners about creating win-win scenarios. It’s the commander’s intent, and defining myself as a commander is daunting. Putting our mission out there means we are moving forward, even if everything isn’t perfect. Is the job remote? I don't usually even respond to that question but I had to respond to a person regarding an HR site leadership position after she asked if a position was remote: "The whole plant is remote because my client has devised a way to make their product remotely, their hope is pretty soon no humans will be needed at all." Which I guess would eliminate the need for HR in the first place. But I don't understand how you justify that to yourself - or the person turning the wrench at your facility. Is the Chef remote? In the past few months, I've noticed many tech companies, startups, and mid-sized businesses advertising HR Manager positions requiring 3-5 years of experience, with a compensation range of PKR 60-80K or a bit more. To these companies, I offer the following advice: - Understand the true meaning of a “Manager.” A mid-management HR role exists to provide at least competent to proficient level of expertise & guidance on HR systems and processes while handling operational tasks that ensure daily operations meet quality standards. - This position requires maturity to deal with diverse personalities and foster cross-functional collaboration. - Expecting such individuals to develop your HR strategy, performance management system, or talent acquisition strategy is akin to asking a day laborer to design and build your house on sturdy foundations. - Hiring candidates with limited experience for such crucial roles sets them up for failure and ultimately harms your organization. To the young CEOs, I urge: - Setting the foundation for your people-related functions and systems requires individuals who can analyze your organization's culture, structure, and decision-making matrix. - They should have a deep understanding of which systems will work for your company. - They need excellent communication skills. - They should be able to collaborate with the CEO and line managers to secure their buy-in. - If you think you will guide them on what and when to do tasks, you're operating at a very operational level, diverting your time, focus, and energy from business strategy. - They should not act as a post office for the CEO’s office. “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do.
