I walked up to a wafer prober station in 1999, I had been working for STMicroelectronics for probably four days. My teammate Shen who was leaving the department to get out of the "dungeon" (basement full of labs) was showing me around our work area. Shen is a very smart guy and maybe made an assumption about my experience. When we walked up to a probe station with an HP4156 (seen in the photo) - I said "Can you teach me how to run this?" and I was met with the response "Read the manual".... I was kind of shocked (I didn't say anything though, because you know "avoidance" and all) What Shen didn't know was that despite my title of Senior Engineer, my two previous jobs did not present the opportunity to run that specific tool. 1) Honeywell - had to have Secret Clearance for the probe floor (Security Officer accidently put me in for Top Secret so my short tenure didn't allow enough time before a layoff), so Brian Radam hooked me up with probe data. 2) Uniroyal Optoelectronics - (took it off my resume, 3 month tenure) - I built a lab for reliability stress of LEDs (different equipment). What I learned from that day was that we need to meet our co-workers, spouses, children, everyone - where they are at. Meeting someone "where they are at" involves understanding and empathizing with their current emotions, thoughts and level of understanding of a topic without judgment or expectation. I learn this over and over when dealing with my three teenagers. So start meeting people "where they are at" and really connect. You'll get more done at work, you'll have more peace at home, and all around more happiness. #lessstress #happiness #relationshipsmatter
