We’re honored and excited to announce a new partnership! Today, ACC joined @theuniversityoftexasataustin and the @Texas Institute for Electronics to launch a new initiative designed to help make Central Texas a premier hub for comprehensive workforce development that will fuel the needs of the semiconductor industry. Together, we’re building a special program that can serve as a one-stop-shop for an industry in need of skilled labor, creating seamless and coordinated education pathways between UT and ACC to address every skillset on the semiconductor workforce continuum, ranging from equipment technician to semiconductor engineer. Under the partnership, UT and ACC will: Develop a joint Semiconductor Training Center (STC), allowing students at UT, ACC, and nationally to receive hands-on technical training combined with academic theory. It also will host programs designed to transition current workforce talent into the semiconductor industry and advance the careers of incumbent workers. Develop Semiconductor Curriculum & Credentialing. Leveraging faculty from both institutions along with industry experts, this initiative will build stackable skill-based microcredentials and related education activities, with plans to develop K-12 partnerships. The US is racing to boost domestic chip manufacturing. Doing so could strengthen supply chains, reduce national security risks, and create thousands of jobs. A shortage of qualified American workers to fill these jobs is one of the biggest obstacles facing the industry, among the reasons training programs have begun to sprout up across the country. One of the leading programs, Quick Start, is located in Arizona, which many have called the future of the semiconductor industry. But after visiting the state last fall, I learned about a snag in the plan. Quick Start is churning out hundreds of trainees at the same a multitude of factors have slowed the industry’s near-term hiring — resulting in a glut of graduates who have few paths to semiconductor employment. Sure, roles are expected to materialize in the years to come. But being trained for a job of the future doesn't do you much good when the future isn't here yet.
