Tech history highlight: today marks the anniversary of RCA’s first commercial broadcast in 1939 from the New York World’s Fair. At the time of the broadcast, there were very few people who saw it. Bloomberg estimated less than 1,000 televisions served as the initial installed base. But as you can see below, that number has steadily increased to near universal adoption. Bloomberg also reported that the first paid commercial was from Bulova and cost a whopping $7….my how far we’ve come. Many of us alive today have essentially grown up with television and the medium can easily seem to be both a fabric of our lives and simultaneously unremarkable. But at the time, this was as cutting edge and as futuristic as it gets. As we scramble around the latest tech craze of #AI, it behooves us to look back and note that at one time RCA was one of the most technologically advanced companies with a coveted stock similar to many high-flying tech plays today….but just like bicycles, railroads, radio, and television these cutting edge themes can fade in profitability while becoming ubiquitous. We are thrilled to announce that our paper, "The Role of Eye Contact in Human-Robot Interaction: Trust and Decision-Making in Virtual Financial Advisory," authored by Carolin Kaiser, Rene Schallner, Vladimir Manewitsch, and Emma Lee Fenne, has been accepted for presentation at the European Conference on Information Systems 2024 in Cyprus. Rene Schallner presented our research, which explores the impact of a robot's eye contact on human trust and decision-making in financial advisory contexts. Our findings reveal that a robot's eye gaze significantly enhances perceptions of anthropomorphism, trust, and satisfaction in virtual financial advisory interactions. Interestingly, no notable effect on investment behavior was observed.
