Today I'm pondering teams, and when (and why) they work well together. I've mentioned that I signed up to play recreational kickball here before. We just played our 3rd game (won 1, lost 2) last night and I keep thinking about the idea of a team in different settings. The kickball team I'm on is called "Free Agents," which is funny, because as a freelancer and consultant, that's what I am at work—a freelancer or free agent. The Free Agents kickball team is developing into a coherent unit, which is really cool. Essentially, the team consists of two groups of friends and a handful of random strangers. Ages and abilities vary dramatically. One of the groups of friends is made up of very athletic college-age men, the other is me, my kids, and one athletic friend. The random folks fall at all points in the range from 50-something lady (that's me) to college-age man. The fact that such a heterogeneous group is working together as a unit after 3 games is really amazing. I never would have predicted it. If we had the time and inclination to get together for practice once a week in addition to the weekly game, we'd probably see impressive results. Most teams register together, and already know each other -- the team currently leading in standing is a group that works together, who have likely had at least some training as a group, for example. So the Free Agents had a disadvantage in that way from the beginning. It's funny that it surprises me to see us working together well, though, because working with my clients and finding my place in their workflows and processes is one of my favorite things and it's essentially the same thing as the kickball team figuring out a groove. You can see from the photo what an odd group we are 😂
