'Struggling to cope with work'. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this listed among the symptoms of patients coming to see me in my NHS menopause clinic. Most are battling on, some have cut back their hours, many have taken the decision to stop work. It is heartbreaking to see women, often at the peak of their careers, often with additional caring responsibilities, forced to make hard choices between their wellbeing and their careers. When 17 percent of symptomatic women consider leaving work because of a lack of support in relation to their menopause symptoms, and 6 percent taking the decision to leave, employers need to act. Helping women thrive in the workplace during perimenopause and menopause. In 2023, the CIPD conducted a “Menopause in Work Employee Experience” survey with over 2,000 women aged 40 to 60.  Here are the key findings:  •       73% of employees surveyed have experienced symptoms related to menopause transition.  •       Over half have been unable to go into work at some point due to symptoms.  •       67% reported common symptoms like mood disturbances, anxiety, depression, memory loss, panic attacks, loss of confidence, and reduced concentration.  •       Two -thirds of women (67%) said menopausal symptoms had a mostly negative effect on them at work.  •       Around one in six people (17%) have considered leaving work due to a lack of support in relation to their menopause symptoms, and a further 6% have left work. Surprisingly, most individuals keep this information private due to concerns about privacy and reactions from colleagues. These insights underscore the critical need for organizations to implement support measures for menopausal employees. According to the report, respondents are looking for specific support from their employers, including flexible working arrangements (43%), control over temperature (36%), and assistance with emotional well-being and mental health (34%). It's evident that creating a supportive workplace environment for individuals going through menopause is crucial for their well-being and productivity.
