Why job titles matter! One of the latest trends we're noticing in the industry is the inconsistency in job titles and leveling across companies. Take the Senior MSL (Medical Science Liaison) role, for example. In some companies, this position is now being rebranded as a Field Medical Director with larger pharmaceutical firms. Despite the title change, the responsibilities often remain quite similar, creating confusion and potential hesitancy among candidates. Titles and levels can sometimes become a significant barrier for candidates considering new opportunities. Many perceive a lower title as a step backward, even if the responsibilities and future prospects of the new role are superior. This perception can limit career growth and the chance to take on impactful roles that align better with their skills and ambitions. It's vital to look beyond the title and closely examine the actual job functions and growth opportunities. So, how influential is the title on your decision-making process when considering a new position, compared to the role, responsibilities, and compensation package? Probably both🤔 I believe this is one of the key issues for most professionals like yourself wanting to break into the MSL role. On the one hand you feel overqualified – you are a highly accomplished professionals with probably a terminal D degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, DNP, DMSc) and an impressive track record of accomplishments. However, you (are made to) feel underqualified for the MSL role, as most MSL job descriptions ask for MSL experience and a long list of required MSL knowledge, skills and competencies, that you don’t have (or have in a different industry). So what to do? You are stuck between a rock and a hard place! Your (terminal D) degree and achievements to date will only get you an entry ticket to be potentially considered for this job. To get invited for the MSL interview, you need to show you speak the language of pharma and more specifically the MSL language. You need to thoroughly upskill and come to the interview talking as if you have worked as an MSL before. 🎓 Start speaking the language and know everything about the MSL role and pharma lingo such as: clinical trials, phase 1-3, clinical guidelines, SoC, treatment algorithms, compliance, code of conduct, scientific exchange, data generation, IIS, reimbursement, FDA, PI, SmPC, product monograph, regulatory approval, fast track approvals, BLA, NCE, IND, ICER, QoL, primary endpoints, HR, confidence interval, relative risk reduction, on- off-label, code challenge, cost minimization, cost effectiveness analysis, and I can go on for another 10 lines. 🎓 In short, start upskiling yourself on the pharma and MSL language. ⚠ Don’t rely on your previous experience. It got you where you are now, but will NOT get you that MSL job. It requires endless hours of upskilling. Seriously, hours and hours! As a hiring MSL manager I found "How to break into your first role as an MSL 2nd edition book" by Dr Samuel Dyer to be a tremendous resource for anyone interested in the role of an MSL. It is a strong guide that is easy to read, easy to navigate contents and a map to guide you into the challenging road to become an MSL. Although the MSL role is highly desirable career, landing one is complicated. But Dr Dyer shows you the way to understand the role, to apply effective strategies for your job search, to networking and building an effective CV that will draw attention.  The hiring process is not as easy as it may sounds, but Dr Dyer clarifies step by step what a candidate needs to do, how to prepare for a phone and formal in person interview, questions to ask and how to follow up.  The MSL role continues to grow year after year as more pharmaceutical companies rely on their scientific expertise to educate healthcare providers on their product and proper use.
