Me: "Most people enjoy a drink at work, right?" 435 respondents: "Hold my b̶e̶e̶r̶ soda water..." 🚫 Majority Support Workplace Alcohol BAN, Poll Shows. I did a poll last week that surprised me. It revealed that a significant portion of the workforce favours BANNING alcohol during working hours. Out of 1,036 respondents, 42% backed a total prohibition of drinking at work, signalling a shift away from the once-common business practice of boozy lunches. The poll results come in the wake of ANZ’s move to reconsider its alcohol policy after multiple incidents of intoxication on its trading floor. Three traders have since left the bank, and another received a formal warning as the company embarks on a culture review. While a sizeable group, 32%, still believes that having a drink with clients or at office celebrations is acceptable, 25% feel that workplace culture should dictate whether alcohol is appropriate. Only 1% were unsure. So what to make of this? A common comment was around risk...when you allow it (even at small scale) you open yourself up. The findings probably reflect the changing attitudes toward alcohol in professional environments, with many now seeing it as a potential risk to productivity and reputation. The debate over workplace drinking continues, as companies revisit their policies in light of modern workplace expectations. c̶h̶e̶e̶r̶s̶ Thanks for joining the conversation.

Don’t Tolerate Drinking at Work including work related parties Drinking even small amounts of alcohol before or while carrying out work will increase the risk of an accident. Alcohol will cause resentment among employees who have to 'carry' colleagues whose work declines because of their drinking. One of the characteristic signs of a substance misuse problem is the deterioration of workplace performance. The cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impairment that results from drug or alcohol use can affect productivity, morale, and even the safety of other co-workers. Companies should incorporate alcohol rules for the workplace and for workplace events/parties.

**4 in 5 employers don’t have alcohol in the workplace policies in place** We recently hosted an insightful discussion in partnership with The Work Foundation, chaired by journalist Courtney Kealy, looking at employee wellbeing in multigenerational workplaces. With an ever-changing workforce and evolving societal norms, we brought together leaders from across business, policy, trade unions, and academia, looking at the role of alcohol policies in the workplace and the importance of fostering positive and inclusive work cultures. Following our roundtable, the Work Foundation conducted an in-depth study and Survation Ltd polling revealed that although more than one third (34%) of employers believe staff socialising in person is important given the increase in hybrid working, only one fifth (11%) have alcohol policies on responsible consumption in the workplace. The Work Foundation report sets out clear recommendations to employers on how to create inclusive and positive workplace cultures: • Event labelling – change the description of events away from "drinks" to "socialising" • Alternative drinks – provide non-alcohol drinks alongside alcohol drinks • Event timings – host morning, lunch or afternoon gatherings to include those with caring responsibilities • Dietary requirements – ask about preferences for non-alcoholic drinks • Training – provide resources and tools to support effective alcohol in the workplace policies In response to the findings, IARD has launched new resources to inspire organizations to develop alcohol workplace policies. As global employers and responsible leaders, we have workplace alcohol policies embedded and we want to play our part promoting progressive work cultures based on inclusion and choice, whether employees choose to drink or not. You can visit the link in our comments to find IARD’s free online resources. We are grateful to our participants who took part in the roundtable including representatives from International Labour Organization, Eurofound, Benenden Health, Centre for Ageing Better, CIPD, The Educational and Community Response Centre, FEMSA Proximity Division (OXXO), The Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FAAR), Loughborough University, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, PwC, and Acas. Is alcohol consumption in the workplace an issue for you? It is often an overlooked thing and quite often seen as a separate issue to drugs. However, there are still over 17,000,000 days lost on average in the UK due to alcohol related sickness! Alcohol consumption has various effects on the workplace, impacting both individual employees and the overall work environment. Here are just five examples: Decreased Productivity: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to decreased cognitive function, impaired decision-making, and reduced productivity. Employees who come to work under the influence may struggle to focus on tasks, make sound judgments, and meet deadlines, ultimately affecting the overall efficiency of the workplace. Absenteeism and Tardiness: Alcohol-related issues, such as hangovers or ongoing struggles with alcohol dependency, can contribute to increased absenteeism and tardiness. Employees dealing with alcohol-related challenges may miss work more frequently, leading to disruptions in team dynamics and workload distribution. Increased Risk of Accidents and Injuries: Impaired coordination and judgment resulting from alcohol consumption can elevate the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace. This is particularly relevant in industries where physical tasks or operating machinery are involved. Accidents not only pose a danger to the affected individual but also create potential liability issues for the organization. Negative Impact on Workplace Culture: Excessive alcohol consumption or the presence of intoxicated employees at work-related events can contribute to a negative workplace culture. It may lead to discomfort among colleagues, strained professional relationships, and a decline in morale. A healthy workplace culture is crucial for employee well-being and organizational success. Legal and Liability Issues: Workplace incidents related to alcohol use, such as accidents or conflicts, can result in legal and liability issues for employers. Employers may be held responsible if they are aware of an employee's alcohol-related problems and fail to take appropriate action to address the issue. Legal consequences can include lawsuits, fines, and damage to the organization's reputation. It's important for employers to address alcohol-related issues proactively by implementing clear policies, providing education and resources, and fostering a supportive environment that encourages responsible behavior among employees. #alcoholfree #alcoholawareness #Firstcohortinternational

40% of employers mention alcohol as a significant cause of low productivity. This doesn’t just affect your business financially; it also has a knock on effect on the wellbeing of your team. Supporting #DryJanuary as a business can be a great way to encourage your staff to explore their relationship with alcohol.
