A milestone reached for the #EU🚀: carbon emissions fell by a record of 15.5% in 2023 thanks to a surge in #renewable power output. We applaud the EU's ongoing efforts to bolster #cleanenergy, and we're thrilled to support renewable asset owners and managers as well as corporate clean energy buyers. https://ow.ly/3HQp50Rgpln

For the first time in 142 years, the UK has no coal-fired power plants, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to cleaner energy. The closure of the last plant highlights the growing dominance of renewables, natural gas, and carbon reduction efforts. This shift is part of the UK’s strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, setting an example for global energy transitions. #CleanEnergy #NetZero #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition #CarbonReduction #GreenFuture

The UK's journey towards net zero emissions by 2050 shows promising progress, particularly in the renewable energy field, with a significant increase in electricity generated by renewables like wind and solar. Key initiatives include a commitment to installing electric heat pumps and a surge in grant applications to help homeowners transition away from fossil fuel boilers. These actions demonstrate tangible steps towards decarbonising heating in buildings. Although challenges remain, the government's investments and strategy signal a concerted effort to steer the country towards a more sustainable and low-carbon future. The #energysector sector saw record #sustainable bond issuance in 2023 as #renewableenergy energy issuance rose 85% from 2022 -- the only corporate sector with a year-over-year increase. We expect another year of record issuance in 2024 given that renewable energy-capacity additions have set a new record for 22 years in row, while at COP28, 198 governments agreed to a goal of tripling renewable capacity by 2030. The UK is making significant strides towards its net zero target, aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. Recent statistics highlight the urgency and scale of this transition: ➡️ Renewable Energy Surge: In 2024, renewable energy sources contributed to 51% of the UK’s electricity generation, a notable increase from previous years. ➡️ Government Initiatives: The UK government has committed £2.5 billion towards green energy projects and innovations to accelerate the net zero agenda. ➡️ Carbon Emissions Reduction: The UK achieved a 40% reduction in carbon emissions from 1990 levels by 2023, with the goal of reaching 68% by 2030. This push towards net zero not only impacts national policies but also influences how businesses and homeowners approach energy use. Looking to contribute to a sustainable future? Today, the RE100 launches its annual report detailing how member companies are sourcing renewable electricity around the world. 420 companies are now part of RE100, with total electricity consumption higher than France’s. Members reported many new and existing barriers to buying renewable electricity, including limited supply, lack of options, or poor regulation. Some of these barriers are particularly acute in Asia-Pacific, especially the Republic of Korea. Shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a significant part of the global transition required to limit the worst effects of climate change. One of my key reads of the year is out! Those of us working on corporate sustainability issues, such as energy procurement, benefit from understanding what actually goes into the #renewable energy claims of global brands. This particular assessment of approximately 400 companies with 100% renewable energy commitments contains at least the the following highlights: 1. This is the first ever year-on-year decrease RE100 has seen in PPAs as a share in its members’ RE procurement (35% in 2021 to 31% in 2022). 2. The initiative has much more Asian flavour, which is a good thing if it simultaneously leads to corporates pushing for policy changes to unlock markets and new RE assets being built. The 10 largest electricity consumers joining the initiative since the 2022 RE100 annual report are headquartered in Asia, and the initiative’s new largest electricity user is a Korean company. The decrease in PPAs was due to the initiative’s growing membership in Asia, where most of the structural barriers still exist. 3. South Korea and Japan are the top two countries where members cite barriers to renewable electricity procurement. These are both 'mission critical' countries for the global power sector decarbonisation thanks to their substantial reliance on fossil energy, while being global manufacturing hubs (ie where companies use a lot of electricity). Great annexes as well containing the procurement constructs per brand and per market. It gives those brands the recognition they deserve and sheds light on those who might still have a way to go. Alberta’s recommendations for the Restructured Energy Market were announced earlier this year, which consider the effects of renewables on generation supply mix and system reliability (among other things). In this latest video from our series on renewable development in Western Canada, Lou Cusano and Gino Bruni take a closer look at the anticipated changes to the energy market—and what this might mean for renewable stakeholders.
