I am kicking off Mental Health Awareness Month 2024 with an exciting announcement. I have earned my certification in Mental Health First Aid from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I've considered this program for some time and thanks to Jennifer Massey, had the opportunity to make it happen. I can't share enough positive feedback about this training led by Joelle Monaco and Graham Healey. They educated, raised awareness and, when appropriate, lightened a very heavy topic. They are a dynamic duo. I believe everyone should consider this course because it empowers us to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Whether you're a parent, teacher, coworker, or friend, Mental Health First Aid training can benefit you at work and personally. At work, MHFA enhances your ability to: Support your team by recognizing signs of mental health struggles among colleagues and offer appropriate support. Create a positive environment by fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes mental well-being, reducing stigma and promoting open conversations. Improve productivity by addressing mental health challenges promptly and prevent absenteeism and improve overall productivity. Enhance leadership skills by developing empathy and effective communication skills, crucial for leadership roles. If you're an HR professional, this program is also eligible for 8 credits towards HRCI and SHRM recertification. Stay tuned for my second post with the personal benefits for considering taking the Mental Health First Aid certification program. #MentalHealthAwareness #MHFA #BreakTheStigma #thehopeisticway

Helping HR access the best workplace mental health training, which enables each employee to communicate with empathy, understanding, and self-awareness | Mental Health First Aid delivered differently.
This week, I’ve been wrapping up a Mental Health First Aid course with a dedicated group from Scottish Sea Farms. With just a few assessments left tomorrow, I’m already feeling incredibly encouraged by their commitment to action. What sets this group apart is their proactive mindset. While many clients complete mental health training, it doesn’t always lead to long-term change, or the momentum fades. But with this group—all men—they’re taking it further. They’ve formed peer groups, come together outside of formal sessions, and defined key actions they believe will create a more supportive culture. This initiative is particularly inspiring given their tough working environments—long hours, physically demanding jobs, and all-weather conditions across the Highlands and Islands (including Orkney and Shetland). I’m confident they’ll follow through on their plans to shape a workplace where everyone feels supported, and I’m excited to see the lasting impact they’ll make. It’s a powerful reminder that training is just the beginning—action and collaboration are where the real change happens. 🌱 How is your organisation turning training into meaningful change? #MentalHealthFirstAid #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealthAtWork

Last week, I had the privilege of spending a day with some truly incredible minds, lead by Angele Poitras diving deep into strategies to navigate workplace stress and mental health challenges. This session didn’t just offer insights; it inspired deep reflection on my own mental health journey. For most of my adult life, I've journeyed along the mental health continuum, often moving between the states of being Healthy, Reacting, Injured, and Ill—sometimes without even realizing it. Personal struggles like illness, grief, economic uncertainty, and even poor life choices have all influenced where I landed on this continuum. At times, I’ve been in a very healthy state, while at others, I’ve found myself bouncing back and forth from Ill to Injured, and eventually to Healthy again. What struck me during this session is how so many of us go through these fluctuations without always recognizing the signs. Stress, anxiety, poor sleep, and even subtle mood shifts can sometimes go unnoticed until they start to seriously impact our well-being. But with time and self-awareness, I’ve learned to recognize these signs in myself. It’s an ongoing process—one where I continuously learn what works for me in achieving a better state of mind. Yet, I know that many aren’t as fortunate. For some, the journey is more difficult, and the road to recovery isn’t always linear. So today, I urge you to check in on your neighbors, your friends, your colleagues. Ask them how they are truly doing—and sincerely listen. Be brave enough to share where you are on the continuum at any given time. Remember, even when things are tough, the road ahead can and will get better. But sometimes, it does get worse before it improves, and that's okay. Take care of yourself. Seek help when needed. And most importantly, let’s support each other in this journey. #MentalHealth #Wellness #SelfCare #Mindfulness #WorkplaceWellness #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportEachOther #ContinuumOfCare #Resilience
