It's always worth remembering that you don't consider diagnostics when making a claim for HFT=1. An item + a diagnostic is not HFT =1. According to IEC 61508-2:2010 you need to be at least one fault tolerant (not including diagnostics) to claim HFT=1.You can however use fault exclusions to eliminate very improbable faults! I presume the logic here is that in IEC 61508 HFT(hardware fault tolerance) and SFF (a measure of diagnostic coverage) are two metrics which can be traded off against one another. Therefore allowing the diagnostics to form part of a HFT claim would be wrong. #functionalsafetytom

I’ve been looking at ISO 10605: 2023 today, but really from an ESD gun calibration view point for the Equipment Calibration Business. Are there any changes that effect the gun calibration? Sort of! For sure there are some significant changes in the standard that update the way the testing is carried out. Those changes will definitely require test laboratories to update their test procedures if they haven’t already done so. The use of the island jig is now written into the body of the standard and the way this is grounded and equipment laid out also changes. The use of dissipative mats to mount the EUT is required for some of the testing. There are also quite a few subtle changes, for example, the ESD gun should be capable of 20 discharges per second, this was 10 in the 2008 version. A lot of automotive capable ESD guns meet this requirement (I’ve checked the EMC Partner ESD3000 and Teseq NSG 438 datasheets). From a calibration viewpoint there is now a recommendation that a 1 MOhm resistor is connected from the discharge tip to ground during testing. This is to stop pre-charging the tip between discharges. If this is going to be used, then according to the standard the application of this should not affect the current waveform. Obviously, a 1 MOhm resistor will have little effect on a discharge to a 2 Ohm target, but if incorrectly rated components are used and there is a breakdown within the resistor then that would change the current waveform. For this reason, calibration should be carried out with it connected. Here is the list of main changes directly from the introduction in the standard: — introduction of alternative test set-up with field coupling plane for direct and indirect discharges on component (powered-up test); — minimum number of discharges changed from 50 to 10 for indirect discharge on component (powered-up test); — interval between successive single discharges changed from 50 ms to 1 s for indirect discharge on component (powered-up test); — addition of a ground connection for discharges on DUT pins for component packaging and handling test method (unpowered test); — optional test set-up and procedure for electronic modules (powered-up test) moved from Annex to main body; — addition of new Annex G. #EMC #ESD #calibration
