"When LGBT+ young people are supported at home and at school, they are able to flourish in adulthood. When school and home are not supportive environments, LGBT+ young people face worse mental health and higher levels of shame and are far less confident that they will be able to achieve the things that adults typically hope to. The consequences are vast and serious. Unsupported LGBT+ young people are half as likely to be happy in adulthood." Just Like Us Positive Futures Report: How supporting LGBT+ young people enables them to thrive in adulthood. The full report has some great recommendations for how school staff can support LGBTQ+ young people and highlights the significant difference they can make... https://ow.ly/OiMg50Slj37 #LGBTYouth #MentalHealthMatters #InclusiveEducation #TraumaInformed

According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth are at risk because of a lack of acceptance, understanding, empathy, and compassion. That lack comes at a great cost: a national survey conducted in 2023 found 41% of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide in the last year. LifeWorks NW is proud to participate in Zero Suicide, a nationwide initiative to bring together care providers and communities to end suicide. One tool our communities can use: 988. Call or text to connect with a trained counselor and local services, including specialists in youth or LGTBQ+ care. Even though Pride Month has come to an end, our commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community in adult social care settings remains strong. While there has been an improvement in meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in many aspects, we still lack appropriate support in social care services. There is also an assumption that all older people are grandparents and have family to fall back on when their health declines and they need support. However, 90% of LGBTQ+ people are ageing without children, and many have little contact with their biological families. This increases the need for more formal support and care services in later life. Although the number of LGBTQ+ seniors will double in ten years, there are few, if any, existing care schemes with a focus on older LGBTQ+ residents. The same is true of care homes. That’s why we believe that live-in care offers an excellent alternative for those seeking care in an inclusive and supportive environment. A startling 57 percent of people in the LGBTQ+ community have reported that they or an LGBTQ+ loved one has been threatened or have experienced harassment and a trailing 51 percent have experienced violence due to their sexual or gender identity. While sheer statistics cannot encapsulate the social pressures that the LGBTQ+ community experiences, they certainly do speak to the multiple variables that can exacerbate emotional distress for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. To combat this issue, the first step is awareness. Pride Month is a time for celebration, but it's also a vital period for reflection, education, and advocacy. Here are some important aspects beyond the parades and rainbows: History and Awareness: Understanding the origins of Pride Month, which commemorates the Stonewall Riots of 1969, is crucial. These events were a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Visibility and Representation: Pride Month amplifies LGBTQ+ voices, bringing attention to issues that still affect the community, such as discrimination, violence, and legal inequalities. Support and Solidarity: It’s a time for allies to show their support, learn more about the community, and understand how they can contribute to creating a more inclusive society. Education and Advocacy: Pride Month encourages education on LGBTQ+ issues and history, promoting awareness and understanding that can lead to social change. Mental Health: Highlighting the importance of mental health support for LGBTQ+ individuals is vital, as they often face higher rates of mental health challenges due to societal pressures and discrimination. Community and Belonging: It's about creating a sense of community and belonging for LGBTQ+ individuals, providing safe spaces where they can express themselves freely and authentically. #mentalhealth #equalityforall #pridemonth #elliementalhealthrichmond #elliementalhealth

Older adults and people with disabilities face extra challenges being part of the LGBTQ+ population in the way of finding connections. Across all subsegments of the LGBTQ+ community, people report being more isolated, less financially secure, and often without the same level of familial support as others who are not part of the queer community may have. When you add aging or disability, when you need those extra supports, it can be extra challenging. But while challenging just talking about the issues presents an opportunity to consider what more we can do to ensure our programs and services are truly equitable and inclusive—and recommit to taking action. #pride #pride2024

Today, The Trevor Project released our inaugural 2024 Mexico National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, which amplifies the experiences of 10,635 LGBTQ+ young people in Mexico between the ages of 13 and 24. The results of the survey reveal an alarming truth: over 50% of LGBTQ+ youth have considered suicide in the past year. This painful reality disproportionately affects 2 out of 3 #transgender and #nonbinary young people between ages 13-17, a crucial stage of life marked by identity exploration and acceptance. By addressing these factors properly, we can reduce stress and protect LGBTQ+ youth from future harm. It's time for all of us to take concrete actions and provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well-being of all LGBTQ+ youth in Mexico. Every word, support, and action resonates. #YourActionsEcho Check out the survey results ⬇
