Is it time for Construction to emulate the PR campaigns of the British Army in order to raise awareness of job satisfaction and the wide range of career opportunities - as well as build its reputation as a welcoming industry for people of different physical abilities, races and genders? A recent report from Deconstruction as reported by Specification Online and Construction Buzz states that "nearly 7 in 10 UK adults would not want a career in construction." This is so sad to hear. Particularly as respondents to the YouGov research have stated that they would be more likely to recommend working in construction: If it was a career that paid more If it offered more high skill roles If construction was a more welcoming place for people of different physical abilities/races/genders There is so much lack of knowledge and understanding about construction as a career. For example it is highly paid - the median salary in construction sector is 20% higher than UK median salary, and salaries approaching 6 figures are not unusual both for on-site and office-based roles. It is also disappointing that the sector is not seen as highly skilled by 19% of respondents. Whether working on the tools or in the office, high skill levels and years of experience are required - hence the skills shortage. Those in the industry all know the personal satisfaction of saying "I built that". And there is such a wide range of roles (from trades to site management, surveyors, estimators, architects, designers and engineers, as well as HR, legal, sales and much more) and so much scope for career progression. Yet Construction is still not mentioned as a career choice or is seen as a fall-back career for the less academic! Change needs to start in the hearts and minds of parents and teachers of children from pre-school to those in secondary and higher education. What would you put in a PR campaign? #Construction #Surveyor #QuantitySurveyor #Architect #Carpenter #Bricklayer #PlantOperator #ConstructionCareers #Decorator #CivilEngineer #Estimator #InteriorDesigner #SiteAgent #ConstructionManager #ConstructionContractsManager #ProjectManager #Plumber #Electrician #Plasterer #Engineer #Scaffolder #Shopfitter #Tiler #Erector #WomenInConstruction
