Picture this: my first job out of the gate was at the Nelson Mandela Institute for Rural School. Fresh off my stint as the first female President of the SRC at Fort Hare University, I was ready to dive into the world of innovative thinking with this stellar team. And oh, what a ride it was! Now, let me take you back to one unforgettable adventure. We were on a mission to visit schools in the rural heartland, and boy, did we encounter some wild scenes. Deep in the forests of Mqanduli, we stumbled upon a school that was, well, more of a jungle gym than an actual building. Prefab structures were the name of the game, but this particular one had a surprise in store: asbestos. Yes, you heard that right – the stuff of nightmares straight out of an Erin Brockovich flick. But wait, it gets better (or worse, depending on your perspective). As we cautiously ventured into the classrooms, we learned that the real danger wasn't just the asbestos – it was the snakes. Apparently, these slithery friends liked to cozy up in the insulation when things got toasty in the afternoons. Needless to say, our interviews were cut short as we high-tailed it out of there faster than you can say "snake charmer." Jokes aside, that experience sparked a fire in me to question the very foundation of our education system. Are we really equipping our kids with the tools they need to conquer the world? Are we making the most of our resources to ensure meaningful learning experiences? These are the questions that keep me up at night – and I'm betting I'm not alone. So, where are the leaders with the big ideas? Who's ready to shake things up and ensure that every child has access to quality education? The clock is ticking, and it's high time we start hearing some answers. Are you with me? 🔥 #BTWYRU #Voting #education #EducationRevolution #InnovativeLeadership #SnakesInSchools

"Anita hit the ground running exploring the family relationships, asking sometimes difficult questions of all of us. If anyone had told us that we could get to where we are now we would not have believed them"
Being part of an ultra high net worth family is unique. But nobody said it was easy. With great wealth comes the responsibility of making sure your heirs understand the values, complexities and dynamics of being stewards for the next generation. The smartest people in the world are those who never stop learning. So I encourage anyone who is part of, or works with a family enterprise to join our LinkedIn group and learn more about The Family Wealth Essential Series 👇 https://lnkd.in/e3MtBFkH

I would LOVE to know what inspires you to give on days like this or at any other time. What drives your #philanthropy? If you're looking for a way to make a difference, please check out all of our #thestateday projects and choose something that aligns with your passions! EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR makes a DIFFERENCE! I made my first gift of Georgia State Day (#thestateday - That's right, you don't have to limit yourself to one thing or giving just one time!) - 10 gifts of $5 each, all at once, using the "multiple gift" option. Here's what I supported today & #why: WPN Child Development Center Endowed Scholarship - Child care is essential in any family, especially if you're holding down a job and trying to go to school. I wanted to support #GSUPanthers that are parents by assisting in covering tuition for their kiddos' child care in the Child Development Center CEHD Alumni Endowed Scholarship - Scholarships are essential for all students at GSU and the impact of our graduates at CEHD is always people-centered. They are the most likely of GSU grads to change lives through their service CREATE Teacher Residency Program - This program is AMAZING. It supports early-career teachers (GSU grads) in our city and helps them start their professional careers in a community of support that is essential to current and future success. Study Abroad Programs - I studied abroad and it was TRANSFORMATIONAL for me. I want GSU students to have access to similar experiences. Friends of Music Scholarship - Music is a #PASSION for me and I will always support those who want to bring music and art into this or any community Center for Leadership in Disability - I grew up with a parent and family members focused on advocacy for the differently abled and went on to work in this space early in my career. I will always support these kinds of projects and organizations. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence - The legacy of Gwendolyn and Alonzo Crim is amazing as are the family members I have met - and the mission of the center resonates deeply with me. Archives for Women and Gender Fund - The Library serves every member of the university community but has no alumni. It is a central piece of our learning ecosystem but remains an unsung hero. I was challenged to support a fund last year and will do so each year moving forward. World Languages and Cultures - I love languages. I have studied 4 foreign languages since I was a kid. I believe communication and knowledge of languages and cultures will be instrumental in the future success of our world. I would love for all GSU students to have greater access to these courses and to deeply explore a foreign language. Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language - I was able to study some English teaching for non-native speakers courses in grad school. I loved it and they changed my perspective on how brave you have to be to come to another country and try to speak the language.

How is it that Collegiate Recovery Programs and Communities are thriving at HBCUs with Black & Brown students in recovery and Black and Brown allies but our PWI communities are still homogeneously white males with only few exceptions? While I know the answer to the question, I don’t yet have a solution.

Back to school and work for me tomorrow. As I prepare for the fall session of my Masters of Education in Indigenous Education, my mind and heart are ignited by this semester's class title: "Critical service learning and engaged scholarship in Indigenous Education". "What, then, of the learning? What, then, of the processing, the reflecting, the meaning-making? ... many organizations that fancy themselves socially conscious and purposefully engaged in their local communities, seemingly mistaking volunteerism for service-learning." (Gorsky, Forward. 2011. Stewart, T., & Webster, N. (Eds.). I'm excited to dive deeper to explore the relationship between relative privilege and the relative repression of the communities in which are often being served.

Check out this wonderful article written by Zvi Gutierrez! I had an incredible opportunity to apply for an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) position in Cambodia with The Fulbright Program, and I am honored to have been chosen as an Alternate. While I wasn't selected as a Finalist, the application taught me about myself and how we can promote cross-cultural connections. Give this article a read if you want to know more!
