Have you ever noticed that when a candle doesn’t burn completely, it leaves an impression in the wax and continues to burn around that impression? The candle is said to have a memory. The impression in the wax remains there if it is not dealt with in the correct manner. It is the same for our body and mind. When a particular memory is stuck with us, and we do not pay attention to it and deal with it properly, it has the power to take over every aspect of our life. When a bitter experience is suppressed by us, the body keeps a score. It makes sure that we are brought back to the memory till we finally make our peace with it or acknowledge it and process it. It does not necessarily mean that we have to deal with it and forget about it, but it means that we should be able to feel the emotions and go back to the experience without it affecting us in the same manner that it did. Instead of taking the power away from the experience, you are limiting the power it holds over you. When you take care of the candle and let it burn properly without letting it leave an incomplete impression in the wax, the candle is freed from the toxic hold of the impression. Orienting your senses to what you find pleasant can be incredibly resourceful. For me lilacs and butterflies spark delight! The smell of lilacs is so beautiful to me. And lilacs are all around right now, so I get to their lovely scent most times I’m outside. And butterflies, well, I think so many of us enjoy spotting these delicate creatures flying or resting about while we’re out. I took some time to bask in the floral scent and watch this pretty little critter, while noticing the ease it brought to my body. Orienting is so simple, yet it can really help the mind & body feel a sense of safety and peace. It’s also a really individual thing! For example my wife really doesn’t like the smell of lilacs 😂 So she would definitely need to orient to different sights and smells, because these flowers bring about inpleasant memories and emotions. It’s a great practice to tune into what in your environment YOU find delightful, peaceful, calming, etc. And once you do, see if you can tune into these often.
