In May, we organized an informative and successful webinar about the ERC grant. We welcomed over 30 future ERC candidates with a diverse scientific background from all over Europe. We've discussed the application procedures, shared our best practices and explored how we can help them in the run-up to the summer/autumn deadlines. Many thanks for attending! We look back at an inspiring first ERC webinar! #ERCGrants #webinar #LifeSciences #science #research

"I am doing my doctorate because I am interested in future-oriented topics and would like to apply my acquired knowledge in practice at the same time!" Did you know? The DBFZ’s doctoral programme, which has been in existence since 2013, offers #doctoral students a variety of opportunities to delve deeper into a topic in the field of #bioenergy and #bioeconomy and to apply the knowledge they have acquired in applied #research. For practical work on their research topics, doctoral #students will find state-of-the-art technology in the DBFZ’s well-equipped #laboratories, pilot plants and offices. The expert supervision provided by experienced DBFZ #scientists is an additional guarantee of high-quality doctoral supervision and research. Academic supervision is generally provided by renowned #universities in #Germany with which the DBFZ maintains research partnerships. The doctoral students take an active part in the research life of the DBFZ right from the start and are integrated into ongoing projects. Regular participation in high-level scientific events (e.g. Doctoral Colloquium BIOENERGY and DBFZ Annual Conference) introduces them to the scientific community at an early stage. In addition, they are given the opportunity to consolidate their experience through committee work. https://lnkd.in/eVrNwU_U #DocBIOENERGY #Biomass #Bioenergy #Bioeconomy #DOC #PhD #Research #Network #Doctoral #Young_Scientists #PostDoc

The upcoming arXiv API upgrade is set to transform scientific research by introducing an indexed affiliation search, enabling researchers to track specific institutional output and collaborations. The upgraded API will also integrate with ORCID, allowing users to track a researcher's contributions across multiple fields within the arXiv database, thus promoting a highly targeted search mechanism. This development is expected to empower the research ecosystem by fostering open science, promoting transparency, and inspiring collaboration, ushering us into a new era of scientific research.

Here's more evidence of changing post-PhD career paths, this time for graduates of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. More recent cohorts were less likely to go into PI roles, and more likely to go into other academic roles, industry research, non-research, and even non-science roles. While in this particular example the majority of graduates stayed in academia, it's a pretty reasonable assumption that academia will be the minority outcome for EMBL graduates soon.
