August 18, 1932: At 5:04 a.m., Professor Auguste Antoine Piccard and his assistant, Max Cosyns, launched a hydrogen-filled balloon from Dübendorf Airfield in Zürich, Switzerland, lifting their pressurized gondola into the stratosphere. This expedition aimed to investigate the upper levels of Earth’s atmosphere and study cosmic radiation. During the 12-hour flight, Piccard and Cosyns reached an altitude of 16,201 meters (53,153 feet), setting a new Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Record for altitude. One of the many cool things about flying in the Huntsville, AL area is that there's an actual Saturn V rocket as an unmistakable landmark. Besides landing us on the moon, the Saturn V launch system had some other impressive facts: * Stage 1 produced 7.75 million (!) pounds of thrust or about 11,000x the amount of thrust Li'l Blue's 180-hp Lycoming produces. 🙂 * The five Aerojet Rocketdyne F-1 first stage engines gobbled up about 40,000 pounds of fuel per SECOND! Li'l Blue, on the other hand, sips about 60 pounds per HOUR. 😉 * In 2017, the LEGO Group released a kit to build your own brick Saturn V (and it contained 1,969 pieces - a tip of the hat to the year that Saturn V launched the first humans to land on the moon). It's available for about the price of a typical fueling of Li'l Blue. 😃 The Saturn V is on display at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (actually, they have two - one is horizontal and indoors for your up-close and personal viewing pleasure) plus a shuttle external tank/solid rocket boosters and many other #missiles and #rockets. 🚀 The debut of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Lockheed Martin's 'quiet' supersonic X-59 demonstrator earlier this year sparked renewed interest in the concept of a "next Concorde". 🏁 In addition to the well-known Boom Supersonic, a handful of startups, including Aerion Supersonic, Exosonic, Inc., Spike Aerospace, Inc., and Hermeus, are fiercely competing to introduce supersonic travel to the public. 💡 Even among AlixPartners Aerospace, Defense, and Aviation team, there's a spectrum of opinions. While some, such as my colleagues Philipp Marquardt and Stefan Ohl, ponder whether it's "just a pipe dream," others, like Eric Deichmann, propose that airlines should consider taking measures to protect themselves from the disruption that would come from supersonic success—if only as an insurance policy. ❓ Where do you stand on this matter?
