The United Kingdom has put out ambitious mandates for the use of #SustainableAviationFuel, leading the way toward decarbonizing #aviation. The new rules are validation of the vital importance of #eFuels like Infinium #eSAF for keeping the world’s people and goods on the move in a more sustainable way. To summarize the new mandate:   🛫 SAF to account for 2% of total UK jet fuel by 2025 🛫 SAF to make up 10% of total UK jet fuel by 2030 🛫 The percentage increases to 22% in 2040 The European Union is also pushing forward SAF implementation, mandating that SAF must make up at least 2% of aviation fuel in the EU by 2025, 6% by 2030, 20% by 2035, 34% by 2040, 42% by 2045 and 70% by 2050, per the EU's #ReFuelEU Aviation rules. Last week our CEO Alex Chikhani and Board Member Andy Spinks were invited to speak at the Air Fuels and Sustainable Energy Association (AFSEA) for the second year in a row. Sharing CirculAIRity's learnings about the challenges of creating a Sustainable Aviation Fuel that is actually sustainable throughout the end-to-end process from development and production through to distribution, and how this is relevant to defence. It's not often when you can honestly say that a 2-hour webinar was time well spent. Let's face it, our attention spans are getting shorter and shorter and we're not in Covid anymore, Toto. However, today was an exception when Arcadia eFuels knocked it out the park and organised a fantastic gathering surrounding eSAF and the challenges we face in ramping up production and driving down prices. Damien Meadows of DG Clima/Innovation Fund was on brilliant form as he took us through the support that is already in place in the EU for incentivisation for airlines to purchase SAF as well as other policy incentives around electrification and hydrogen (see slide below). Laurent Donceel spoke on how to best optimise a policy mix to best alleviate pain points for airlines in adopting SAF. Mariano Berkenwald gave an excellent breakdown on how Breakthrough Energy are supporting the aviation industry through this tricky transition and Cathryn Estes got everyone excited about how collaboration can be possible with consistent communication and a proper mix of project finance thrown in. Last but definitely not least, a round of applause for Matteo Mirolo, the MC of the event, for holding the space for us all in this global, online event. A new report from Project SkyPower urges swift action to scale eSAF (electro-fueled sustainable aviation fuel) production. Led by top European aviation CEOs, the initiative estimates that €15-25bn in investments by 2030, plus €3-5bn annually, are needed to meet SAF mandates and close the cost gap with fossil jet fuel. European airlines can meet the ReFuel EU Sustainable Aviation Fuel mandate of 2% by 2025 according to SkyNRG's latest SAF Market Outlook. However, sustained policy support and investment are key to maintaining momentum and to deliver enough SAF to help airlines reach their Net Zero target by 2050. This is particularly true for eSAF where many projects to supply eSAF are still only in the feasibility phase. At an event to help launch the report this week, Laurent Donceel highlighted challenges that still need to be overcome like production costs, supply issues, renewable energy access, and feedstock sustainability to ensure we have enough SAF flowing in Europe over the coming decades.
