It has been a truly enriching few days at the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supply Chain Initiative in London hosted by Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation Programme (SAF IP) and Innovate UK Business Connect! These are the top 3 insights that I've taken away: 💡100% SAF flights aren’t that far away and the lifecycle carbon reductions (64%) by going 100% SAF is phenomenal! I was initially uncertain how the Virgin Atlantic Flight100 occurred due to the need for aromatics in the fuel to ensure safety while flying until I came across Virent, Inc, whose synthetic aromatics were used in the first ever 100% SAF transatlantic flight. That’s such an exciting development in the SAF space and moves us closer to 100% SAF flights in the future, whether it is 100% drop-in or not! 💡SAF mandates are appearing worldwide and the UK is one of the most recent regions that came up with theirs! Indeed, using both demand and supply-side mechanisms would be crucial in supporting and ensuring the uptake of SAF moving forward, especially with the emergence of supplier obligations (both main obligations and Power-to-liquid obligations) and the revenue certainty mechanism. 💡As much as it is a SAF conference, carbon removals being thrown into this portfolio to reduce emissions is extremely crucial! Carbon removals play a crucial role in ensuring NEGATIVE EMISSIONS instead of just reducing avoided emissions. Ultimately, the work we do aims to achieve NET-ZERO and even better, NET-NEGATIVE EMISSIONS. Companies should look into a variety of decarbonisation pathways in the aviation industry to make that happen. Such an enriching and informative conference and kudos to the team behind it for gathering together professionals crucial to the world’s SAF supply chain! With jet fuel consumption in Australia forecasted to increase by 75% in the next quarter of a century, the need for action on sustainability has never been more urgent. ☝️ And while key stakeholders within the sector are stepping up to this challenge, achieving the full potential of these efforts might require closer collaboration. At the #FarnboroughInternationalAirshow 2024, #Edinburgh-based airline Ecojet announced the procurement of 22 #ZA2000 hydrogen electric engines from ZeroAvia. This strategic investment underscores Ecojet's dedication to becoming a pioneer in #netzero emission air travel, propelling the industry toward a sustainable future. 🌱  "Ecojet is on a mission to make net-zero, emission-free air travel a reality," stated Dale Vince, Founder of #Ecojet. The #ZA2000 engines, intended for installation in regional turboprops with a capacity of 40-80 seats, are set to facilitate the shift to carbon-free operations. We had an interesting discussion with industry players recently at TNW Conference about sustainability in aviation. Rahel de Vriend, Manuel van Lijf, Mirjam Ros and I spoke with the industry about their plans for the future and the challenges they face. Flying is a tough space to reduce emissions in. Why? 1. Planes are heavy so need a lot of thrust to get off the ground to beat gravity. Electric batteries are heavy, so hybrids that use combustion to take off might be more viable. 2. Sustainable Airline Fuels (SAF) are coming on stream. But SAF is still only 2% of total jet fuel burnt each year. There are also challenges with sourcing enough used cooking oils and other waste streams (there's been some recent research that suggests some used cooking oil is actually virgin palm oil). Also, as SAF scales new feedstocks are needed. 3. Planes have long useful lives so fleets are replaced slowly, with aircraft staying in operation for 20-30 years. Pros: not too much aluminium and steel used, cons: aircraft design innovation is slow. 4. Fragmentation and internal competition remains common, with differing priorities and timelines in opposition to each other. It has been encouraging to work on a few projects recently with Schiphol Airport where collaboration is part of the project design. What are some of the solutions: 1. Electric and hydrogen planes. Electric planes are being tested over short to medium distances and should start putting a dent in aviation emissions within 10 years. Hydrogen planes need technology and infrastructure development. Hydrogen demand to decarbonise other industries (like steel) is growing, so there will be supply and cost challenges. 2. SAF is the most readily available solution, and has also been shown to reduce contrails (which have a strong warming effect). 3. More efficient aircraft. Changing aircraft aerodynamics can reduce emissions by 20% (blended wing designs, more efficient jet engines). Noise reduction is also important for those living by the airport. 4. Airports are trying to control what they can. Turning off the engine while at rest and during taxiing, reducing ultrafine particles on the apron, electrifying ground transport etc. Technology is a big part of the solution. Both startups and established players are working on concrete solutions that are available now and are expected to come to market over the next 30 years. So is regulation to ensure innovation is imperative for manufacturers, and more energy efficient modes of transport are used where possible. Customer choices for low emissions options should be incentivised too (I love the train, and my Eurostar membership is going from strength to strength this year, but it's not often competitive on price). The aviation industry needs to confront the future with bold action to reduce emissions.
