The Two Oceans Aquarium is looking for a Content Coordinator to complement our Marketing & Communications team. The ideal candidate is someone with excellent audiovisual skills, the ability to express their creativity in written or multimedia form, a keen interest in environmental issues and specifically the ocean, is eager to learn and contribute to the success of one of Cape Town’s top tourist attractions and its non-profit Foundation and has a strong background in communications or social media management. This is a position that rewards flexibility and enthusiasm, as we tell the Aquarium story and showcase the exciting and rewarding work of our Foundation! The role is office-based in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Minimum requirements: • A minimum of two years of relevant experience and a related qualification in media, marketing, communications, social media management, photography, videography, English or a related creative field. • Strong proficiency in photography, videography and editing. • Excellent verbal and written communication ability in English. • Full computer literacy, use of MS Office, and comfort with online tools such as CMSs. • Experience in content creation in the form of short and long-form copywriting, and visual media. • Creativity, flexibility, and curiosity. • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a diverse team. • A love of animals, the ocean and the environment. Fundi is aimed at helping companies hire world-class marketers but should also be responsible for educating their clients on what is appropriate and reasonable for a singular role. This job spec isn't. For a Head of Brand and Marketing, it calls for: strategy, market research, content creation, graphic and web design, video production, photography, copywriting, social media... it's a sizeable list. It mentions experience in managing a team but also calls for specific skill sets in each of those areas so it's unclear as to whether you're expected to do all these things alone or manage others doing them? When I queried this in a comment, the post was deleted. I implore marketers to not accept job specs like this. It creates an expectation in the industry that we should dancing, singing, unicorn-monkeys. There is no way for anyone to be *good* at all of those things. Hire the people you can, find agencies to help with the rest. You don't get to have all the skills you want if you can't afford them. https://lnkd.in/diJcvdC6

Dear YETI, I was working on a list of early career marketing jobs and stumbled upon this Junior Copywriter role. It looks amazing—just like your brand and products. There's just one little problem: ❗It requires "1-2 years in advertising or an in-house copywriting role."❗ WHY must you break my heart, YETI?! 💔 Hasn't this awful Catch-22 tortured enough people (myself included)? It makes zero sense to require work experience in order to get work experience. I totally get that you want qualified people to join your team, so I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse: ▶ Instead of measuring experience based on a "butt-in-office-seat" timeline, ask candidates to show samples of their copywriting work: their social media feed, a website, the emails they wrote for their mom's business... ◀ Maybe this work isn't paid, but it counts as experience. I would argue it also says a lot about the candidate's drive and tenacity that they might be doing all this stuff without a paycheck. Because YETI, ultimately, you and I want the same thing: to hire people who have the skills needed to succeed a role. When it comes to marketing, you can gain, practice and polish these skills even if you've never held a full-time job. In conclusion, a PSA for all brands hiring early career marketers: 📣 Stop scaring away great candidates. Kindly remove the years-of-experience requirement from entry level marketing job descriptions. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Silesia, where I studied Promotional and Crisis Communication in the field of Public Relations.
