The recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, serves as a chilling reminder of how out-of-control America's gun policy has become and how deeply entrenched political violence threatens our democracy. Regardless of whom we support, such violence is unacceptable and must be condemned. The fact that a shooter, armed with an AR-style rifle, could attempt to murder a political leader in broad daylight is a damning indictment of our failure to address gun control. This incident should jolt us into recognising that our democratic process is at risk and that both parties must urgently unite to kerb this spiralling violence and champion non-violence. Implementing non-violence requires comprehensive gun control legislation, widespread education on conflict resolution, and a national commitment to fostering respectful political discourse, ensuring that violence has no place in our society.

No matter our background, zip code or political party, most of us believe that violence has no place in our political process and weapons of war have no place in our communities. We unequivocally condemn violence in all of its forms - in all spaces, all contexts, and against all individuals - no matter whether they are running for office or running through a school hallway. We must come together and remember that we all deserve to live our lives, move through our communities and engage in our political process peacefully. We need to see leaders of all stripes and backgrounds speaking out against violence both physical and rhetorical publicly and in no uncertain terms. Finally, we must make this a country where no one fears for our lives or our loved ones. A country where we ban weapons of war so they’re not used against elementary schoolers and politicians, movie goers or concert attendees. A place where the people who represent us, put people first and pass comprehensive gun safety legislation beginning with an assault weapons ban. 

This #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth, we recommit to working toward a safer nation for survivors and all people, where we all can thrive free from fear. And we are reminded that in just a few days, SCOTUS will hear oral arguments in ‘U.S. v. Rahimi,’ a case that will determine whether the federal government can prohibit people actively subject to a domestic violence civil restraining order from possessing firearms. For the sake of survivors, for the sake of gun violence prevention, and for the sake of a safer democracy, we hope that SCOTUS affirms these important protections.
