Feel free to add any other interesting tidbits. - **Independence Day Origins**: The 4th of July celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, marking America's freedom from British rule. - **Revolution Timeline**: The American Revolutionary War started in 1775 and ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. - **Casualties**: Approximately 25,000 Americans died during the Revolutionary War, fighting for independence. - **Colonial Population**: At the time of the revolution, around 2.5 million people lived in the American colonies. - **Founding Years**: The American colonies had been established for about 169 years before declaring independence (starting with Jamestown in 1607). - **Declaration vs. Constitution**: The Declaration of Independence announced the break from Britain, while the Constitution, adopted in 1787, established the framework for the U.S. government. - **Bill of Rights**: The first ten amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, were added to the Constitution in 1791 to protect individual freedoms. - **Why the Bill of Rights?**: They were added to address concerns that the original Constitution didn't sufficiently safeguard personal liberties. Why We Must Protect Our Freedoms on Independence Day. The 4th of July is a day to reflect, remember, celebrate and protect our freedoms. From a historical perspective, the Declaration of Independence set forth a unique ideal which has become the cornerstone value of America; enshrining our rights to Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. We fought to achieve our Independence from forces without, and then from within to abolish slavery, women’s suffrage, and civil rights for all. But now we are challenged by politicians from within who seek to limit and stifle our rights to free speech by censorship and other acts. On September 17, 1787, 39 men would sign the greatest governing document ever known to man. It was designed to protect and promote the freedoms of all, and it would be subsequently sent off to the various states where the people would decide on its ratification. The U.S. Constitution! It’s a document unlike any other. Nothing like it existed before 1787. And no document has facilitated more freedom and prosperity than this one. At the time of the signing of our Constitution, nearly all human beings for thousands of years were ruled by kings, emperors, czars, sultans, tribal chieftains, and thugs. But this document was different. It began with the proposition that men and women were to be free, and it put things in motion that soon would eradicate slavery, bring about women’s rights, and equal protection under the law. This is a document that I love and am fighting to protect. It is the answer to so many of our ills. Certainly, the political problems we continue to experience are not happening because of our Constitution. They are happening in spite of it. Indeed, September 17, 1787 was the hinge point of human history!

Today, we pause to reflect on Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day. It marks a cornerstone in American history: the abolition of slavery and the long-awaited enforcement of emancipation in the last Confederate state. #Juneteenth #weservetennesseans
