KEY UPDATES – In future conflict with peer adversaries marked by the threat of cyber attacks, a contested logistics and energy environment starts here in the Homeland at our military bases. The Air Force is “all in” on nuclear power projects including and beyond the Alaska demonstration project. The Navy will be issuing a Request for Information targeted around October 2024, seeking creative concepts to explore siting privately-owned, NRC-licensed nuclear reactors at Navy and USMC installation to supply military and community power needs. The Army ‘s offering with the DOD Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) resulted in an overwhelmingly positive response from over 40 vendors. Project Pele for the development of a portable, modular reactor is progressing well with full congressional support. Each Service wants to partner with nuclear reactor developers and utilities to deliver reliable power for critical national security missions.
