Ep. 45 of the Career Everywhere podcast is live! 🎙 Featuring Sarah Coburn (she/her) of St. Lawrence University for a discussion about how she built a successful on-campus internship program. The on-campus internship program (OCIP) provides paid internships for students to work in various departments on campus, gaining valuable skills and experience. The internships are structured to include additional professional development time and orientation (also paid) through the career center. In the episode, Sarah discusses: 🔶 What the OCIP looks like and how it’s structured 🔶 Why she built the OCIP and how valuable it is for St. Lawrence students in rural upstate New York 🔶 How the internships are structured (e.g. what the roles look like and in what departments, who supervises, how performance is measured/monitored, etc.) 🔶 What the additional professional development through the career center includes 🔶 How the budget works (e.g. who pays the interns) 🔶 How she built cross-campus partnerships with other departments and employers and got buy-in 🔶 How she measures success 🔶 What results and outcomes she’s seen since launching OCIP 🔶 Her goals for OCIP in the future 🔶 And more Watch, read, or listen to Sarah's episode here: https://lnkd.in/gYAxn2bB #CareerEverywhere #careerservices #highereducation #careerdevelopment #podcast

Tons of powerful data in the latest research from Strada Education Foundation and The Burning Glass Institute #TalentDisrupted report out this week. The big takeaway? *Half* of college grads are underemployed. Notably, the researchers found that the odds of underemployment for graduates who had at least one internship are 48.5 percent lower than those who had no internships. A key recommendation in the report? Ensure all college students have access to paid internships. That sounds good in theory but could prove problematic in practice... because it conflates form with function. While students need internships, internships need disrupting. To make work-integrated learning both affordable and effective, colleges and employers need to take a much more disciplined, outcomes-driven approach. My thoughts on why and how: https://lnkd.in/eHwUyvyK H/T: Jeffrey Moss, Matt Wilkerson, Beau Boice, Matthew Hora, Sowmya Ghosh, PhD., Nichole Torpey-Saboe, PhD, David Clayton, Kim Merritt, Natasha Morrison

As usual, great perspective from Julia Freeland Fisher! Building upon the historical data captured in the Strada Education Foundation / The Burning Glass Institute research, Julia shared actionable insights on how to address these challenges and opportunities. Beyond the implications for learners and colleges / universities, this presents a significant opportunity for employers. As Parker Dewey's research shows, offering #MicroInternships leads to better hiring outcomes, lower cost-per-hire, improved retention, and enhanced diversity.

Despite the ongoing emphasis on work-based learning, balancing these experiences with academic and other commitments can be overwhelming for early career individuals. It's clear that internships should not be separated from education but rather an integrated part of it. The Internship Equation Report 2024 addresses this issue alongside offering actionable steps for both educators and employers to work together effectively to bridge the gap between academia and industry. College used to be seen as the best choice to success. New data is showing half of college grads are underemployed. This article digs into how to create impactful internships in college to curb the problem. It is good! What about including more career exploration experiences while in high school to help students better identify potential career pathways? In turn, this helps them to determine appropriate post-secondary education and training opportunities. If you want to discuss a way you can impact students by sharing your career journey and expertise, let me know. You don't need to be in Greater Cincinnati to contribute. Let's help students explore, engage, and excel! HCESC Workforce Innovation Network Donna Lauver Hamilton County ESC Ohio College Tech Prep Southwest Region

Awesome research on the power and value of internships from Thrive Scholars. Definitely a must-read for all of my student connections. Happy Wednesday! Today, I'm excited to share some research our staff here at Thrive Scholars has found on how internships are pivotal for post-graduation outcomes. The Center for Research on College-Workforce Transitions (CCWT), led by internship expert Dr. Matt Hora, released a report (found here: https://lnkd.in/gjQwpXN2) summarizing the three wave College Internship Study’s key findings about internship participation, access, and outcomes. Three key outcome results that matter for us include: 1) graduates who participated in at least one paid internship have the highest rate of employment after graduation 2) those who completed at least one internship during college were about three times more likely to be in the mid-to-high income group rather than the lowest income group 3) graduates with an internship experience were almost three times more likely to enroll in graduate school than participate in the labor market. (which also helps the labor market by hiring in more highly educated candidates - ones that also have real world experience via their internship experience(s)!) Internships matter—and we focus on supporting our Scholars to them each summer, with 73% of the upcoming college class of 2024 and 69% of the college class of 2025 having participated in an internship this summer. We rely on our corporate partners to help share this message, and others, with our scholars. Want to help the next generation of top-performing, high-achieving, diverse candidates? Let's talk and help these amazing individuals better understand career paths ahead of them. #careerdevelopment #industryexploration #futureleaders

Last week, I participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education's event, "The Future of Academic Internships," which delved into the increasing emphasis on internships for higher-education students. The discussion highlighted how colleges are reshaping their services to better connect academic experiences with career outcomes. As this evolution takes shape, what implications arise from colleges extending internship opportunities to all students? The challenges that must be addressed are important in my role on the Practicum team here at Gillings. The presentation shed light on the struggles faced by students who encounter barriers in securing paid internships, often having to compromise their preferred work settings. https://lnkd.in/eXzNKMXt
