Sheffield Hallam University is one of the UK's largest providers of nursing and midwifery education. It blends theory and practice with its applied learning approach. The SHU team added virtual reality to the curriculum after the pandemic cut clinical placements. This gave students more learning opportunities and advanced their professional development. It began as a way for third-year students to make up for lost clinical hours. But it became a consistent simulation for students of all years. Charles Sturt University welcomes the Government’s announcements of paid placements for teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work students, and relief for study debts. These measures were recommended in the Australian Universities Accord final report. University students have been forced to overcome substantial financial barriers to complete placements and pay for their courses, especially in recent times when cost-of-living expenses have hit hard. Australia’s productivity and wellbeing depends on enabling more students to attend and graduate from university, filling essential skills gaps for our communities. While these changes are welcomed, it is disheartening that financial support for students on placements will not commence until July next year. Students need this money now. In 2023, Charles Sturt had more than 16,000 student placements, totaling more than 1.9 million hours, many of which must be completed away from their hometowns. We are anticipating similar figures in 2024 and argue strongly that these students need to receive these payments to support them to continue their studies. These measures are a welcome start to addressing the cost of university education especially for regional and equity students, but more is needed. Most university students do not qualify for student allowance, and even if they did, most have to work part time to afford basic living costs. It is more doable if you were studying a BA or BComm with an expectation of 20-25 hours per week of classes. But for courses that are heavy on clinical placements such as nursing and medicine, we are expected on site 40+ hours per week already with studying and assignments on top of that. In this video, the TWO representative is having to dodge the question around funding nursing students. Which is understandable given that TWO does not have control over funding for nursing student wages. The argument against paying nursing students is that an employment agreement means that they would work more than they learn but of course at the moment they still work more than they learn but aren't paid for it. What we could be looking at as an alternative model is either universal student allowance for core professional university degrees - think nursing, teaching, social work and medicine. Or expand what we already have which is the Medical Trainee Intern Grant. This is paid to final year (6th year) medical students as a grant which is an untaxed stipend. This income was created when the Trainee Intern role was moved from being an employed junior doctor to an extra year as a medical student to improve the learning of graduates to have an extra year to practice these difficult tasks. By removing the employment it reduced the burden of responsibility but the grant still honours the work that final year students contribute. We could recognise the value and labour done by students in these core professional training placements that contribute to our public services. Police are paid for their four month training course, why can't we value our nurses the same? In debates with likely Minister of Health-elect Dr Shane Reti, we were in agreement that workforce must be a key priority for Te Whatu Ora and The Ministry of Health. It will be interesting to see how and if things may change. To anyone who says we can't afford to support our nursing students, I say we can't afford to have this health workforce crisis. #Assessment Today we discussed Gordon's Functional Health Patterns Assessment. #Student and #intern nurses learnt how the #theory is used. Eleven functional health patterns assessment is the foundation of data collection and nursing care plan. They were reminded that all nursing procedures are evidence-based and backed up by #theories. The theory was explained with examples. This was done to equip them with the knowledge of the pattern of #data collection. Their duty allocation today will be on admission and discharge to assess whether learning has taken place. I am a #clinicalinstructor to #studentnurses and #internnurses. NSW University students enrolled in healthcare degrees can apply for up to $12,000 in subsidies to support them in their studies. The grant initiative aims to create a future pipeline of health workers with up to 850 nursing students, 400 medical students and 150 midwifery students expected to enter the subsidy program each year. Subsidies are also available for students studying paramedicine, Aboriginal health, dentistry, oral health therapy, psychology, pharmacy, physiotherapy and medical physics. Students can now begin applying for this support and must be willing to make a five-year commitment to the NSW public health system. New students will receive scholarships of $4,000 per year and existing students will receive one-off payments of $8,000 upon graduation.
